Isn't it supposed to be colder in summer, or have I been living in Britain too long ?

Some of these areas have been flooded several times recently...Hebden Bridge for instance?

@Marionville Both Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd have been flooded at least once a year for decades. Mytholmroyd gets water from the River Calder and Hebden Bridge from a tributary, Hebden Water. Same problem: the moors become saturated and will not hold any more rain, so the rivers and the Rochdale Canal just keep on rising. Nobody nearby can get home insurance (or business) without paying a colossal premium.

Sometimes Todmorden, a little further down the Calder Valley also floods, and Walsden, which is near the highest part of the Pennines, is flooded when the Rochdale Canal overflows at the top of the hill.

I really feel it for the small traders on the main streets of Hebden and Mytholmroyd. I wouldn't mind betting this latest flooding puts a few out of business altogether.

@Red_Cat. Your right about that...it must be really demoralising, I thought they were supposed to be building new food defences...what happened to them!

@Marionville The "flood defences" did not work in the vast majority of cases. The problem is the changing world. What used to be a fast stream through Hebden Bridge, turning the waterwheel for the mill in the centre of town, has been known to rise over 8ft in two hours. That means into most of the town centre properties. There aren't enough places where excess rainwater/river water can drain away. Traditional flood plains have been eroded by concrete and tarmac, and the already stormy Pennine weather is becoming more stormy as the climate crisis progresses. Local charity Treesponsibilty:

have planted thousands of indigenous hardwoods as part of the effort to reverse climate change. The trees will bind together soils in such places as those which have been denuded for shooting gamebirds. I hate to be pessimistic; I have friends in the charity, but I tend to think the Trumps of this world can destroy quicker than trees can grow. I am really depressed about deforestation in general.

@Marionville Just watched Channel 4 News, and Mytholmroyd is awash (sorry) with Army personnel building up the flood defences with those temporary panels they use. One Calder Valley resident told of "landowners" who are using the moors for grouse shooting and ignoring their responsibility to maintain their property in a sustainable manner. The River Calder is well up, the land is saturated and rain will simply go straight down the valley sides and who knows how high at the bottom?

I was disappointed with all news channels for not including in the figures they quoted the number of times the Rochdale canal has flooded Hebden Bridge, as well as Hebden Water.l

I can't help thinking that, if this situation is going to be the norm in future, it would be more practical to rebuild some of the worst affected places a bit higher up the valley. They were only built at the bottom for:

1. easy transport solutions; canal, road, rail
2. to capture the maximum power for the water wheels that used to power the earliest mills.

The rest of our animal cousins are not sentimental about moving on when they have to. Sadly, in this case it is humans who have destroyed their habitats. Surprise, surprise.

Wonder how this is affecting the Shetlands? Just finished season 4 of the series. This series has phenomenal acting and photography and is one of the best series I have seen in a long time. It's a real kick in the gut series. Love hearing the accent and learning some differences in language, like nae used instead of n't and cot instead of house. What is a Numpex??

@JackPedigo I’m sure the Shetlands would get their share of the winds, it’s a pretty exposed place anyway, but the winds may have been less severe by the time they reached there as they were coming from the south west of the British Isles. As for Numpex...I’ve no idea what that means.

@Marionville Looked up Scotish terms and see there was a mistake. I use subtitles and apparently the word was misspelled. It should be Numpty "numpty - an endearing term/lovable idiot. Shows friendly banter (Och, Jonathan! You're a right numpty)"
