Shame Man

Rattle my bones into shame,
tell me where I am bad.
Humiliate identity,
give me a name: Scheherazade.
Tight black clothing
stretched to fit,
constricting so I cannot sit.
Written hard onto my skin,
a list: debauchery and sin-
for which I’ve owned not one iota
but still fill an heinous quota-
deeds unseemly, undivine,
I worshipped at unholy shrine
of self-destructive turn of wit.
Oh yes, it hurt, a little bit.
But you won’t know that thrill of fear
until you’ve stepped a shade too near,
and then you’re trapped and facing East,
forever serving as a priest
in this religion: heresy;
no meaning, only parody
of something once so close to heart
it had to bleed and fall apart.

Note that for reasons I cannot explain, the site periodically scrubs two words out: "h.a.r.d." and "r.e.l.i.g.i.o.n." from both the poem and this comment! I’ve added periods between the letters to try and thwart this.

This line should read (without the periods):
Written h.a.r.d. onto my skin

But frequently shows up as:
Written onto my skin

With a telltale extra space.

Likewise (without the periods):
in this r.e.l.i.g.o.n.: heresy;

shows up as:
in this : heresy;

Please keep that in mind if you read it with the target words removed.

Quiet a poem, must be left over from religious experience!

Thank you! It's pretty dense with personal metaphors. I think of it as a metaphorical palimpsest, which can be read in different layers, depending on thematic lens.

@ejbman that is deeper than my little brain...can assimilate! I will trust you here...

@Freedompath Ha! Well another way to put it is that it can be a different poem depending on how you look at it: is it a poem about kinky sexuality? Is it a poem about identity? Is it a poem about grief and loss? Is it a coming-of-age poem? Is it about abandoned faith? Is it about social ostracism? And so on...

@ejbman wow! I feel limited! Try me on another one! Abstract is not my strong suit, anyway!
