The Bee Gees...or the Brothers Gibb were born on the Isle Of Man and here is Robin Gibb and King William’s College Choir singing the song Ellan Vannin which is often called the unofficial Manx national anthem. It was written in 1854 by Eliza Craven Green with words later added by J. Townsend. In the same year an iron-built packet-steamer was launched ...the SS Ellan Vannin, which operated out of Castletown, IOM, and which foundered in 1909 with the loss of 36 people.
have the BEE Gees on spotify.
only the oldest brother still alive. hard to believe that Robin & the others have been gone for so long..
Yes...it’s very sad. I think this video was filmed very shortly before Robin’s death.
Thanks Marje, you've just stirred subconscious memories probably of singing the song in primary school and from reading of the tragedy of the '09 sinking disaster - the tears are running down my face. All consciously gone but not totally forgotten!
It is quite an emotional song.
@Marionville trouble is I need to read the lyrics to fully comprehend.
Two different songs!
Yes...the one I posted is the old one which was written to commemorate the launch of the packet-steamer. The second one was penned to commemorate the tragedy of its sinking.
I was taught the version that the Spinners sang when I was a student at Durham University. All the time I've been singing '99 rather than 1909. You are right. I sang it on the 100 th year anniversary ... but in fact on the 90th. I often sing it.
They are two different songs....the Spinners song is about the tragedy.
@Marionville I saw that in looking up about the date you'd quoted. You were right and I was wrong.
