But the only time I came across anything similar was a chap singing this song at St Albans about 25 years ago (Snalbans to some Australians!). I've just learnt that it was written by a Charlie Murphy and covered by many around the world:

Thanks. I loved the Christie Moore version.
@rogerbenham Curiously I thought him laborious and simply money driven. Although not known as a folk artist I prefered the Murphy version which I thought I read, after I listened, had had Santana involved.
@FrayedBear I guess I loved the Irish accent.

Thanks. I knew the bits that you added. I'd first heard yet another version on CBC about 25 years ago. Listened to the whole thing.
