East Timor has long struggled for independence from colonial powers since the mid 15th century when it was invaded successively over the centuries by The Dutch, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the British…the Dutch and Portuguese again, and then when they managed to gain independence from their Portuguese masters in 1975 they were immediately invaded by Indonesian troops and another bloody campaign for independence began all over again. The UN had to send peacekeepers and at last they became a fully independent country in 2002. At the forefront of the campaign in the West for a fully independent East Timor was UNICEF ambassador Morten Harket who visited the island many times during the period of struggle and who wrote and recorded this song which he performs here at Nobel Peace Prize concert in 1996, to raise awareness of the plight of the East Timorese people. I’m including a video of him in an interview on TV in Norway on the subject…sadly no sub-titles in English, but I think we can guess much of what he is saying, and the pictures tell the story anyway.

Yes…I’ve watched many documentaries and a couple of TV dramas with the Australian/East Timor relationship as a subject. Australia have been bullying, aggressive and duplicitous in their relationship with East Timor…driven by greed for the mineral and carbon-based deposits in and around Timor.
