The Winning Kahiko Hula Dance for Merrie Monarch Festival 2022.
Our Kauai Hula Halau made our little island so very proud by winning the Merrie Monarch Festival awards for best performance in both the 'Auana (modern) and Kahiko (ancient) dancing last weekend. The Merrie Monarch Festival, it is the equivalent of the Olympics for Hula. Here is the video of the winning performance for the Kahiko category.
The dancing starts at about the 2 minute mark. This halau is from Kalaheo Kauai, and offers a free show every Thursday at my favorite botanical garden. The medley of songs and chants they are using for their dances are about Kalaheo and Kukuiolono, one of the garden parks I love in that town. I know this is the World Music category, but the World Dance kind of has to go along with that.

The kumu hula (teacher) is using an ipu heke -- a specially grown gourd, hollowed out to make double hollow areas for the sound to resonate. Sometimes it's 2 gourds pieced together. It does make a lovely sound and is traditionally played to keep the beat for the steps.
@Julie808 An ancient tradition...much like the gourds used in dances I saw in India. FUN!
