Five years ago at the Summer Solstice on 21st/22nd June 2017, a small invited audience travelled from all corners of the globe to Giske Island, Norway, for a two day concert and live recording session for a-ha’s MTV Unplugged album. The band took a selection of their best known hit songs from 4 decades, slowed them down, gave them new acoustic arrangements and a completely new twist on the originals.

This was the last song of the concert…their best known and most iconic song, and this new version was immediately picked up and chosen to be on the soundtrack of the following year’s blockbuster movie Deadpool 2. It is of course….Take On Me.

Loved how the camera panned the audience and showed just how much their music touches people! 😍 loved this one Marje!

Thanks Rhonda…I know you appreciate them just as much as I do.

Unplugged? Well they aren't. Well it is a gentle song. Is the guy at the back playing a keyboard as well?

It is unplugged Roger none of the instruments are plugged into an electrical socket….don’t be so ready to jump to criticise. The keyboards used in this concert were piano, harpsichord, harmonium, dulcitone, celesta and vibraphone. The other instruments played were acoustic guitars, steel guitar, flute, saxophone, mandolinette, zither, kokles, xylophone, drums, bells, violin, viola and cello. A great deal of rehearsing and rearrangement was required by all the musicians involved, to turn 20 songs into acoustic pieces, especially the three musicians who wrote and performed the songs originally with the contemporary synths and electrical equipment appropriate for that time. The original Take On Me was very catchy and upbeat and it sounds very different from this new unplugged version. It was a #1 hit in over 30 countries in 1985…selling over 11 million copies, and has now attained a staggering one and a half billion views with its video on YouTube….

@Marionville At 3.15 you will see a jack cord coming out of the guitar rather than using an instrument mic. Is that a piano being played of a keyboard. The screen in front suggests a keyboard.
I play unplugged much to the annoyance of Sound Guys. I play in the heart of the audience like I did when I first started in small English folk clubs. I sing without a mic.
That guitar is plugged in.

@rogerbenham Well all I can say is your eyes are much sharper than mine. I looked up the instruments used in this concert and listed them for you as stated. If Pal’s guitar was plugged in I’m surprised…MTV were the ones who titled it “Unplugged”. If you think it invalidates the whole performance because one instrument was electric that’s your prerogative. I can sing unaccompanied and pitch perfect at that…and I do prefer in a small venue to sing without a mic …but if I was a professional singer, performing at a concert and being recorded …I think I’d be using a microphone. What is your problem with that ? In answer to your keyboard question…there are two keyboardists in the video…I listed the various keyboard instruments used at the concert, including the piano and others, none of which are electric!

@Marionville I stated: "Well it is a gentle song." In other words I liked it well enough. It seemed to me that they were plugged in for performance rather than using recording quality equipment. Monitors, maybe amps in background. Definitely at 3.13 you see the guitar jack output. I'd expect an instrument mic for unplugged. I've done sound as well. It matters little to me.
