He was the musician in the group but not happy as Jagger took over. Some think he'd have been a huge influence in pop music if he'd not soaked himself in drugs. Interesting that as founder he died and yet had created the most successful R&R band of all time. Just as Barrett created Pink Floyd the most successful "new age" group of all time.
