My brother lives in Norwich…and on a visit a few years ago we went to Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast and visited “The Herring Museum”…a fascinating place dedicated to the history of the herring industry which was hugely important throughout history - and as our mother’s family had historically been involved in herring fishing it gave us an insight into the lives of some of our forebears. Here’s Ewan MacColl’s song Shoals of Herring, written in 1960 for a BBC TV documentary, performed by Scottish group The Corries. I’ve included a link to the history of this valuable trade out of interest…

A song I have known for over 50 years, perhaps by the Corries or Ian Campbell Group. In 1970 I went up to Mallaig and bought herring before it got rail shipped to London.

My mothers family were married into a long line of fisherfolk..the men went out on the boats and the women carried the creels on their backs (on the train from Musselburgh to Edinburgh) to sell herring and other fish on the city streets…up until the early part of the 20th century.
