At this time of the year we think of Santa, reindeers, snow ….and a pretty much frozen landscape. Well that image conjures up the place up near the North Pole where the Sami people live, traditionally reindeer herders, they don’t belong to just one Scandinavian country because as the reindeer don’t recognise borders on a map, neither can the people who herd them. The Sami people are a recognised minority in Norway, Sweden and Finland where they still live in communities where they make traditional Sami art & craft items and herd their reindeer. Over centuries the Sami have also integrated into the general population in Scandinavia, and Sami characteristics of deep set or hooded eyes (an evolutionary protection against the driving snow) can be seen today in many people of Scandinavian heritage. American actress Renee Zellweger and Norwegian singer Morten Harket are two notable examples.
Here I’ve chosen a Sami “Joik” a folk pop song about nature sung by Norwegian Sami singer Elin Kaven - Javkan (Vanished).
