I love musical theatre and many of the stars from the big Broadway & London West End Stage shows, especially from the latter half of last century. One of my favourites was Robert Goulet the powerful French Canadian/American baritone with a 3 octave range who was leading man in many productions including Camelot. Here’s an amusing introduction by him as a lead in to …

Competent. Rather dated by now. 3 octaves? I had over four. I thought your AhA fellow had seven or maybe that was the Korean.

The Korean is a freak. Morten has reportedly got a 4 and a half or 5 octave range, although he himself says he’s never actually counted, he’s also never had a singing lesson in his life, and says nobody has ever given him sensible or practical advice on singing that he found helpful and has just followed his own instincts on how to sing, developing his own style naturally. I liked Goulet who had a great voice for the stage shows, 3 octaves is really quite a good range, more extensive than many other so called stars, and when he was younger nis voice was rich and sonorous in tone too. You really must try not to be quite so disparaging Roger it can be rather tiresome. Mr Goulet had a very successful professional career as an actor and singer of stage & screen. He was much older in the clip above which I posted because of the amusing intro…but in 1961 when he was only 28 he appeared on TV singing the same song …

@Marionville Yes he was was much better when younger. Most people are. To my mind a bass. I think a lot of the highly prized tenors are really baritones. as the public like a manly voice. Even Johann Jonathan “Jussi” Björling – Correctly described as an Operatic Tenor - was a very full tenor, as one requires in opera. The three tenors I'd call baritones. I'd find it strange if a singer had not tested himself for how many octoves he had. At 15 I had nearly 5. The glory just before the voice breaks and why one should stop after breaking for a couple of years.
Did we have singing lessons at school? I do not remember. Ceretainly I hate choir warm ups.
I always sang effectively by ear. I heard the tune a couple of times, figured out the harmony and in the cathedrl choir had a bass music scholar beside who could correct me if singing the right part of the harmony was important. Instinctively I almost cannot be in the wrong harmony but then there are three notes in a harmony. Of course I learnt harmony sing alto, tenor and bass after my voice broke.
