That's sung with great passion!

Is it about a man who chases a rich woman and loses his true love in the process?

Song was the original of a movie of same title... Maria de la O. The scene is two men a rich and a poor both in love with her... the poor one wrote the song about her and is coersed into singing it by the other dude. Maria de la O is a beautiful woman with everything and the envy of all the other women.... but her punishment is never to be happy... but to me being sung by a woman makes more sense of Maria de la O singer her sad life herself... below the original scene of the 1930's Spanish Movie... scene start with both guys phrasing part of the lyrics of the song in their conversation, letting the song about her known to all is their revenge because both feel Betrayed by her. The scene ends with the waiter whistling the melody of the copla. As it start to spread her story in the song. At the End Money and Beauty does not made her happy.
