Ground of Stars (or Starry Ground)
My life was a stage bathed in light.
I would always be dressed in goldenness
As a clown of lost deceits.
Full of fake sleigh bells of joy
I wandered singing my costume
Among the feverish claps of the hearts.
My shed on the Salgueiro hill
Had the lively chant of an aviary
You were the sonority that is over
And today, when the sun, the clarity
Covers my shed, I do miss
The pigeon-dove woman that flew.
Our common clothes hanging
On the cord, what agitated flags...
They resembled a strange festival:
The feast of our colourful rags
Showing that on the badly dressed hills
It is always a national holiday.
The door of the shed had no latch
But the moon, piercing our zinc
Scattered stars on the ground
You stepped on the stars distracted
Without knowing that the adventure of this life
Is the mulatto, the moonlight and the guitar.
