He was entertaining
He was certainly entertaining & ascerbic. I wonder how it would have been if he had deposed Hawke after a few years rather than when most of the party had become arrogantly self fulfilling.
Yes, but his Australian brand of Reaganism and Thatcherism was not. It lead to the decades of Howardism that followed and out of which Australia is slowly emerging.
I find this continuing heroising of Keating and Hawke by ALP apparatchiks frankly absurd, and I do not think it is shared by labour supporters. Whitlam made Australia a better country. Hawke and Keating made it a better country for the rich.
Saw an interview where he admitted his biggest regret policy wise was selling the CBA, who used to lead competitive interest rates set by RBA. I agree with him on that, the whole privatisation of state assets phase they went on.
He was entertaining. And Hawke was a shit load better than Malcolm Fraser but Whitlam was the man. Grew up in SA, Don Dunstan was good too..
@puff yes, I remember it well. In 76 during my honours year studying SA politics with the late Dean Jaench, we were just a small honours group but it included 2 Dunstan-crats from the Premier's Dept. A bit up themselves but they really felt they were reformers and it was an age of things feeling like they were getting better. Very different now.
I can't recall Whitlam ever saying anything positive about Hawke and Keating govts. He kept his own counsel. I believe he was not impressed, and saw Hawke as betraying the progressive agenda for short term gain.
