The "Great Debate" That Wasn't
Throughout capitalism's history, the big topic in economics was how far government should intervene in the economy. Conservatives wanted minimum intervention while liberals and socialists wanted much more. In fact, government intervention mostly aimed at saving, protecting, supporting capitalism. The genuinely "great debate" could and should have been about the strengths and weaknesses of capitalism versus those of a real alternative system, socialism.
This may end up being my first time disagreeing with Professor Wolff at this point. I'll start out with his initial beginning. If you haven't been following him you wouldn't understand he regards feudalism rather similar to capitalism, only having some terminology changes with a few different aspects such as the relationship between workers and employers within the structure. Have no doubt he understands people in that era weren't so free. Which he slightly hits on later. But he also understands in regards to his breaking down of conservatives, liberals, one wanting less government than the other. He realizes that's all bullshit.
He basically redeems that thought as he goes on. Think about this. Conservatives want less government might lead one towards a socialist movement? History has blown their less government claims all to hell. Both share the same agenda, to save capitalism. The speak on less or more government is a deceptive distraction. In the second half he points this out. And my my how he expose the republicans as he goes into the introduction of Trump.
Well he just blew the argument of anyone attempting to use socialism as a reasoning of government intervention, mostly use by republican supporters against a democratic administration. Both parties are guilty of the same actions. Do you hear any of Trump's supporters calling him out for being a socialist?
