Why the Press Sucks So Bad, Part One: A Look Back

[ghionjournal.com]

“All I know is just what I read in the papers, and that’s an alibi for my ignorance.” ― Will Rogers

That pretty much says it all. That managed perception sure is a bitch. It's why somewhere around 52% of the country keep supporting and voting in a corrupt system for the same corrupt politicians. I heard Trump using the truth today again. I hope he was looking in a mirror and took those words a bit personal also.

Most people I fear do not even read but listen to local radio stations who pump out news in scraps not worth saying. The result is massive biases.

Where else to get the news?

For foreign events and US politics I have a post PINNED at the very top of the group mentioning my top few places of independent news sources, and a couple of my favorite independent journalist. Although I really need to edit it being I ran out of space the site gives, it's a start. When you first come into the group there are also hashtags of those sources and people. I have a couple to few other I'll send to you in a private message tomorrow when I have more time.

@William_Mary I'd like to see that list. I get a lot from Common Dreams and the Guardian. 350.org. RT occasionally. Facebook political friends. Tyhee.RealNews occasionally. National Observer. Narwal.

@rogerbenham My top sites for news. Consortium news - my number one of all. [consortiumnews.com] This site was started by Robert Parry in the mid 90's after basically being forced out of main stream media. He passed away in Jan 2018. I highly suggest you read the Memoriam written for him to get a feel of how important his work was. [consortiumnews.com] Highly notable for his work on the Iran-Contra affair. This site is a gold mine with over 2 decades of articles in its archives. I sometimes get lost in reading for hours here. You can learn a lot about our government corruptions and dealings around the world with this information.

Truthout - [truthout.org] I rarely have a complaint about information or get a sense of towing the party lines from these writers.

Common Dreams - [commondreams.org] They have a group of great writters, and they have a few that tend to tow the party lines. I've been following this site for several years. Once you get the sense of reality of good information you can see when a writer is writing for the wrong agenda. One of the best things about this site is the comments section! I know of no other news site that has as many participants in a comments section as CD has. And they don't hold back from calling bullshit on the few writers that tow the line.

MintPress News - [mintpressnews.com] This is a good site to keep up with the middle east. To date I've never found an article that has been misleading. And I've been following this site for a few years now.

teleSUR English - [telesurtv.net] This is a good site to keep up on Latin America issues. Although its main base is in Venezuela, often falsely claimed to be a government owned news source of Venezuela. But it's actually also funded by the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Another good site for Latin America is Venezuelanalysis - [venezuelanalysis.com]

More coming.

@rogerbenham If you like watching news via video like I do. The Real News Network - [therealnews.com] Arron Mate rules here. Paul Jay is good here also. I see you already know this one. But thought I'd post if anyone else is interested.

The Grey Zone Project - [grayzoneproject.com] I like a lot of Max Blumenthal's work.

[theempirefiles.tv] By Abby Martin. My favorite independent investigative journalist. She was previously working mainly through teleSUR until our government shut down her funding from the Latin American countries that own the news source. Her and her brother still do radio programs through Media Roots though. But this site is a small gold mine of her work in Palestine and Latin America, mixed with other work against the empire Building we are engaged in. I impatiently await her return to video work!

@William_Mary Fisk, Pilger and Kate Adie are three of the most important journalists writing about the true side of things.
Yes I read The Real News and Truthout. We have The Tyhee and the Narwhal but also locally The National Observer and of course Dogwood and Centre for Policy Alternatives. Plus several more.
Common Dreams I'm finding is too obsessed with the USA and in particular Trump. I wonder what Trump would do if the press stopped taking any notice of him.

@rogerbenham yea, I like a lot of Fisk's and Pilger's work. UK right, both of them? You can find a lot of their articles on Consortium.

Well, I would argue they wouldn't stop being I believe the 2 work hand in hand with the establishment. They didn't give him billions worth of free time during the election cycle for no reason. Trump spent literally no money on campaigning through the media. And when it looked like he was running out of steam the Mercer family came in and bailed him out. Which is where we got Steve Bannon from.
