Truth be told, we in the US have been hood winked about that war since its time. Forget about 75 years later, but the entire 75 years. Just like WWI the Russians didn't want any part of that war either. Very likely being they were watching how Germany was allowed against post WWI agreements of rebuilding their military, funded and supported by numerous western corporations and banks, along with Hitler and western entities holding secret meetings. Russia had their own security issues to deal with under a constant backlash from the western countries.

WWII was a corporate money making machine with technology still vastly advancing from WWI weaponry. And what better way to take advantage of this than supporting various sides, especially when one is your main chosen enemy the communist who can buy that support. It was a win win for the western counties as Russia is invaded by Germany losing nearly 27 million people while you're draining them of much needed currency resources.

I would suggest within conjecture of course, Hitler was enticed to invade Russia in those secret meetings under the advice he would be helped to win against Russia.

“If we see that Germany is winning the war, we ought to help Russia; and if that Russia is winning, we ought to help Germany, and in that way let them kill as many as possible …”}

I don't know which one though I thought it was Auschwitz, but I met a very good (ex-Californian) friend's dad who had been about 18 when his company marched into that or Birkenau or maybe somewhere else with the Americans. I think the Nazis had all left. Anyway his daughter had never before heard him telling about the war. He was crying in front of me. He had been trained to cut people's throats being dropped behind lines but he said the worst part was being camped with US army close to Russians and watching them butchering Germans.

I have a 96 yo Dutch friend who in his mid teenage years suffered Nazi occupation of Holland for five years and saw the brutality of the Germans. The Germans learnt much of their behaviour of how to treat conquered countrie's citizens from Bonaparte's French invaders. Russians were treated far worse than the Dutch by their German invaders.
@FrayedBear And Germans were treated by the Russians with terrible revenge. They were furious with the Germans, There is a man in our town who escaped a Russian POW camp after being captured from the German army. I think he was very lucky. He is a lovely man.
@rogerbenham There are many who think Kissinger, The Bush Family, the Clintons, Obama, Stalin, Churchill, Pol Pot, Pinochet, Mother Theresa, Mao Tse Tung, et al to be lovely people. Then there are those who don't.
I had an in law who was incarcerated in Changi by the Japanese. After escaping several times he was shipped to work in the coal mines in Hiroshima. By the time that I knew him in the late seventies he was blind as a result of inadequate diet at the hands of the Japanese.
You could not mention anything japanese like Toyota, Mitsubishi or Tokyo in his presence unless you wished to listen to a tirade of hatred. He never expressed his Prime Minister Curtin's public view that Churchill simply abandoned the defenders of Singapore (English, Australian, Canadian and Indian troops to their fates in order to preserve the appearance of a mighty Britain). Churchill never forgave Curtin, a colonial, for expressing his views.
@rogerbenham I have just spent a fruitless fifteen minutes trying to locate a wonderful song written by a Dubliner Uilick O'Boyle which includes reference to Germans working on the Snowy Mountain Hydro scheme here in Australia after WWII.

I have just posted on "Traditional and Folkmusic" a Settlers article which includes a potted bio of Uilick O'Boyle who died back in about 2011.
@FrayedBear I agree but I do like the idea of this song. Myself and a woman were the opening act for the Seekers in 1969 April or May. They were an English group. But Googling shows an Australian group by that name who broke up in 1968. So it could not have been them. Even if we did our act in 1968 (possible) they were top of the charts and I can't imagine them being the same group that played at Grey College, University of Durham alongside us. I do remember that Joanna and I were offered a recording contract after that but we chose to complete our degrees and both got fancy honours degrees which kinda set us in directions.
