Surviving the 21st Century by Professor Noam Chomsky

This lecture was given in the castle , which itself is part of the University of Durham, England, from which I graduated in 1969.

By the way he was noted as 85. He is now 92 so this was done in 2013.

For me it was grand seeing the university coat of arms. It was founded by the Earl Grey famous for the 1832 Reform Parliament. The cathedral founded in 1100-ish was built over a monastery for training priests in about 600. The castle is tiny because it is built with a close loop in the river wear which has very steep banks especially on one side (easy to defend). It of course represents 1000 years of Norman oppression of the English. I don't like castles for that reason. Many of the richest landowners in Britain have Norman names.

This is a wonderful lecture. But if I don't don't relegate or relate my emotional response to fiction or a movie the reality is very depressing. As Sherlock Holmes states, “There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.” ― Arthur Conan Doyle or my favorite
“when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”
― Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Sorry. Ten years at the most left. We brought it on ourselves. We allowed it to happen whilst we drifted through the golden age of the 70's and 80's. By the 90's the rot had established. We proved to be greedy, selfish, uncaring species.

@rogerbenham I'm afraid you're right. I did try to tell people of the evils of reagan, bush and clinton but no one listened. Even most on this site just do not 'get' it. I enjoy the OutoftheIllusion group.

@rogerbenham I heard that same thing recently. It actually said our lapse started in the 50's. We probably have reached the point of no return. Any hopefully strategies we may have had ended with the present non-administration both here and in the world.

@silverotter11 What he said about Kennedy and Obama was really damning.

@silverotter11, @JackPedigo From the early 50's the advertisers sought ways to get us all to spend beyong our means and put ourselves in debt which eventually lead to masses of housewives working if only for low paying factory jobs. This made the manufacturers wealthy and encouraged more and more psychology in advertising. TV helped a lot and started dumbing down the mass of population. Quickly enough TV was found to be a perfect propaganda vehicle.
Meanwhile the military and arms manufacturers needed to justify themselves post war and invented the Russian threat. This started the enormous transfer of wealth into military coffers which just seems to accelerate.
Robots allowed factories to lay off people and then rehire at lower paying jobs. But soon it was realised that manufacturing in poor countries was even more profitable and so factories moved overseas. Never was there any interest in the wellbeing of the workers.

@rogerbenham It all boils down to the same thing, human population growth.
Here is a link to the article I mentioned. [globalcomment.com]

@rogerbenham That was friggin' stunning but not that big a surprise.

@silverotter11 Thank you for not calling me names. People often get upset with this sort of thing and often go after the messenger.

@JackPedigo Oh! I hear ya, no ones called me names but the look I get is enough. People do not want to hear about this topic. Nature will take care of it one way or another and sadly it will get ugly.

@silverotter11 I guess you could say we're fellow gloomer-doomers!! lol

@JackPedigo There's gloom and doom and then there is reality, science - ya know facts.

@silverotter11 Remember the famous line by Jack Nickelson in "A Few Good Men"? "You (they) can't handle the truth." Where you live do you find many who are willing to discuss the "heavy" stuff?

@JackPedigo There are a few but even they weary of the real hard stuff. There is so much old people syndrome, gop supporters and the religious I do not always say what I would really like. A bright note is the new hire in the office, she is like 20 something, no god, woke, loathes trump, etc. Studied anthropology and is so much fun to chat with. She too thinks the over population issue needs to be dealt with. 40 year age difference and sometimes get to forget I'm not in my twenties. Til she makes some reference I'm so not with. 🙂

@silverotter11 Sounds like an interesting place. Sounds like an inter-generational thing with the comments. Of course we were never in that position??

Wonderful chatting! Time to cut my screen time. Sleep well.

@JackPedigo Good morning. I did sleep well. Tho at one point in the middle of the night I thought of this lecture and realized I had not added it to favorites so finding your response in my alerts saved me from tracking it down. After I finished with the PBS vidoe on Miles Davis "Birth of Cool" I want to listen to this one again. BTW the PBS film on Miles Davis: Birth of Cool is OUTstanding!! Even if you are not a fan just getting a sense of how he does music is wonderful.

@silverotter11 Okay, a new lesson for me. I did not realize there was a 'favorite' option. How does that work? Many times I had to go back over and review things linked or posted in the past. Still a computer novice.

@JackPedigo To save or follow a post to the left of the box where you can like , love, laugh, etc. the emoji of choice there's that llittle blue icon to share and then to the left of that are several lines put the cursor over them and you will see a menu of options for the post. Click the gold star to follow (save) the post. 🙂

@silverotter11 It took a little time to get through this thick head but got it. Thank you heaps. Now where does the saved post go and how can one retrieve it?? Let me try one first and then get back to you if my head is still thick.

@JackPedigo I have actually noy yet gone to look but I would 'spect you'd find them in your profile/account.

@silverotter11 Thank you. Will try it and figure it out. Knowing this would have helped for past posts as several times I have had to go back and look for something. So now I have a new tool.

@rogerbenham I was attempting to refer to this in another post, to a degree, without creating a stir. Via the women's liberation and 2 world wars, the injection of women into the work place on a large scale essentially eradicated the successful single working household providing an abundance of slaves. The ruling class used that against us with growing numbers over time.

@William_Mary Sadly most did not see it coming and those who did were never listened to.
