Margaret Thatcher introduced the 'Right To Buy' scheme, offering social housing tenants the opportunity of buying their own council house.
These council houses are usually well built and well proportioned. They are a physical manifestation of post war Democratic Socialism and basic human altruism.
The sting lies in the motive behind the Right To Buy scheme which, in essence, was designed to deplete the social housing stock.
This was to create a deliberate shortfall, which in turn creates artifical 'demand', thus increasing property values and assisting private landlords in charging higher rents.
Two million council homes were sold to tenants but not replaced. This means there is a shortfall of two million social housing properties. Two million homes for the homeless have been erased.
Some of the most sickening behaviour has come from tenants who've bought their home (for a fraction of the value it cost to build) who have since gone on to sell them for a profit or to rent them out for profit.
Democratic Socialism helped them but they stabbed it in the back.
Now there are more people living on the streets.
Capitalism/neoliberalism is sickening and indefensible.
