I'm so excited for this. The Canadian Government invests $153 million into plant-based protein development.

I grew up in the US and moved to Canada in 1980 and love it here. I go home to the US every couple of years. I miss some of both countries but love the liberal attitudes in Canada most.

As mentioned in the article, part of this initiative came about because of the demand for and success of the Beyond Burger at the fast food chain A&W. The vegan community mobilized to get everyone to let A&W know that we appreciate their effort by buying the Beyond Burger, making sure it stays on the menu. Most of their restaurants sold out immediately and it took weeks to restock to meet the demands. I have to say that I don't like Beyond Meat products because they look too much like meat!!! I make my own veggie burgers and prefer Tofurky or Yves for other vegan "meats". But I did buy the Beyond Burger (way overpriced for what you get) once to contribute. There has been a huge increase in the demand for plant milks overall that I'm seeing a greater variety in the only grocery store in my tiny rural town.

Have not had the burger yet but will do so soon.

@Aquaeyes I didn’t care much for it. It was too overhyped. And very expensive for what you get. The patty is vegan but unless the burger is modified it’s not vegan.

I ner imagined that eating at A&W would be a vote for vegans. Life is so funny.

@Aquaeyes It gives vegans an extra option when out there and introduces others to plant based eating. It will become more prevalent. I won’t complain. Though my idea of vegan food isn’t fake meat personally.

That is a brilliant use of research funding.

In addition, the nation would save a fortune if the population ate plant based diets.

Great start.

That's great. I was in the local co-op today and I notices some "Beyond Meat" being sold. Several companies have started the program here with investor money. There is a huge demand.

It will also create jobs for the prairie provinces like mine. We have been hurting economically from the slump in the oil industry. We are already growing these crops here. Instead of feeding them to livestock, we can feed them to people.
