Just read NASA's announcement on finding organic material on Mars. Surface methane detections were also made by Curiosity/SAM throughout the Martion year and found to increase in summer and decrease in winter. This is not conclusive evidence for life but is consistent with the existence of subsurface bacteria, safe from damaging cosmic rays. So....What would the discovery of life, even bacterial life, mean to our planet, cultures, and relegion?
I don't think the discovery of life on Mars would phase most religions. Sure, there will be extremists that will bothered by it. But, most will just rationalize that God made the aliens too. Putting the sun into the middle of the solar system, instead of the Earth, was a far more troubling change for religion, than the discovery of alien life. For those who deny evolution as a whole, will just rationalize it as a god miracle, all the same. There may be a small number of people who would be swayed by this evidence, but not many.
I learned something new today. That organic material doesn't mean there is a connection with life.
Several things. First off it would dramatically raise the chances of alien life outside our solar system. Secondly it would reduce odds that the great filter, if it exists, is behind us. Third it would create a hype among space enthusiasts, conspiracy nutjobs, and probably cause a theological crisis among most major religions.
I hope that it broadens minds that rely too much on preexisting dogma (both religious and secular) about the universe and the belief that we are the only one in it. I'm not saying ET is real, but... There's a better chance that they exist than does any god.
GOD ONLY PUT LIFE ON EARTH! (mimics some christer yelling that on a bullhorn)
