Star Wars is a comic book.

Like both of them, but was always a Doctor Who fan myself.

When it came to space opera's I always found Blake's 7 and Lexx more interesting story wise than either of the above

Wasn't Blake's 7 tremendous. Time for re-runs I think! What was the name of Blake's adversary, the woman dressed in silver if I recall, Servo something?

@Geoffrey51
Servalan played by the great Jacqueline Pierce (in later series she went by the name Commissioner Sleer)

@LenHazell53 Thanks Len, that means I can sleep tonight!

Loved Rodenberry, Nimoy, Shatner incarnation but Next Generation went a bit off message for me.Not saying that it wasn't excellent in itself but not for me. Star Wars has a consistency which is why I just give it the nod, albeit steeped in religio-mystic reference. Not that is a bad thing, but it could be Lord Of The Rings, or at a stretch even The Wizard of Oz transplanted inter-galactically The Star Wars side storylines that are coming through I suspect are to cash in rather than give depth to the plot stream. Hmmm. Looks like I have argued myself into Original cast Star Trek!

I think most true fans of Star Trek think in terms of classic Trek and Next Gen. The core of Star Trek has wained with the various incarnations. Especially with the re-boot movies. I'm less of a fan of "New Trek".

Star Trek is Sci-Fi, Star Wars is not. Star Wars is a Fantasy Adventure based in Space. The robots and aliens could be substituted for Elves, Dragons, Fairies, etc.... and you could have the same exact story. Their Light and Dark side of the Force religion is complete BS. Most of it revolves around black and white portrayals of hero/villain. Redemption is about the only theme they are unique in. Here and there, is some reasonable philosophy, but for the most part, it's all pseudo religion gibberish.
Gene Roddenberry was a Humanist and Atheist. They lean more to Hard Sci-Fi and more realistic portrayals of human conflict. Their stories took on real questions of morality. Star Trek is more cerebral and less dependent on action/fights to drive the story, as compared to Star Wars.

It's no wonder Atheists / Agnostics / Humanists prefer Star Trek over the Religious based Star Wars.

First season of Star Trek on TV, but after that, no. I spent the first Star Wars checking my watch to see when it would be over. Neither, thank you very much.

Star Trek gave me a reason to live beyond my childhood and gave me hope that someone, somewhere would like and accept me.

Praise the Creator of Star Trek! 😉

I like the Star Trek shows because of Roddenberry’s humanistic philosophy. I grew up with the original show, loved and followed The Next Generation and Deep Space 9 and Voyager. I think it started veering away with Enterprise, and the last movies took it to an unrecognizable level.

Gene Roddenberry wrote most of the scripts for , 'Have Gun, Will Travel', with the same as you mentioned, humanistic philosophy. Paladin was a quasi-Spock character.

Is that a film or a series? I grew up in Tijiana, and my English developed gradually, thanks to TV shows like Star Trek, but I never heard of Have Gun, Will Travel. Thank you, I will look for it!

@buzz13
I did not know that, I knew GR always claimed Star Trek was wagon train in space, and that he wrote for several cop shows.
I used to enjoy have gun will travel when I was a kid, great theme song.
Thanks.

The popularity of Star Wars among adults is a mystery to me. Good guys, bad guys in space. Ho hum. I probably would have liked it if I was 12 when first one was released.
Stark Trek TV show and movies are more sophisticated in my opinion. The TV show opened the way for minorities and featured the first interracial kiss. I found Star Trek to be more creative in humor with themes that illustrated important human values and problems . Not all the ST movies were good but the TV show was groundbreaking.

Well, I WAS 12 when the first Star Wars released. (Actually, 10)

I was 13 when Empire Strikes Back came out. It took me years to appreciate that it is by far the best of the entire series.

I was 15 when Wrath of Kahn was released. It made me re-evaluate Star Trek (my experience with Trek is a whole other story)

The prequels trilogy was quite horrid. As I said at the time, with Star Wars being my generation's mythology, there were two camps. One one side, you could have the ghost of Cecil B DeMille direct from a script from Hitchcock starring Errol Flynn, Bogie, Lauren Becall, Marylin Monroe, etc, and people would still claim it sucked. On the other side, you could have Yoda sitting on the loo for two hours, call it The Phantom Dump, and it would make $1 billion worldwide, and be called the greatest thing, ever.

As I said, Star Wars is our mythology. And just like Greek, Roman, and Christian gods, it does not stand up well to rational debate.

The newest movies, people complain that they're basically remakes of the original trilogy. First of all, Star Wars itself is a remake of Hidden Fortress. Second of all, Hollywood has not had an original idea in about 8 years, EVERYTHING is a remake.
