A new neighbor has taken up residence in our SW FL development. I do love critters.

How many household pets have gone missing?

So far, none I know of, though I suspect if any did it would be the FL Panther who roams our area and not the bear.

Bears prefer fish & berries, nuts, corn......usually only eat meat if they find carrion

Don't leave out any picnic baskets!

Or small dogs.

Huge and scary! We're not used to critters that size in Australia. This is what my backyard critter looks like. And no, it's not a rat. It's a bandicoot.

Yeah, but you have many more venomous critters than we do so it kind of evens out.

We spent five weeks in Oz a few years back, loved it.

Gorgeous. I was expecting a gator.

Are you near the everglades?

12 - 15 miles.

@jeshuey I think that is probably easily within a bear's daily roving.

Thats is great, however once it goes into hibernation it is ok to shoot it as Donald has made it into law.

Just try to bear with it.

I don't know, seems to me trouble might be bruin.

@jeshuey well, if he gets too close, just get a fur piece from him.

@Condor5. A bear tried to pick me up once. "Whats ursine?" He asked me.

I live in TN. Most of the bear population is in the eastern part of the state. However, the state park rangers just documented a small population in my area. I hike alone so it puts a new perspective on my hikes. I'll probably never see one on the trails here... I'm okay with that. LOL Fabulous creatures!

Maybe take bear spray with you, just in case.

I've heard mixed reviews about bear spray. If the bear is extremely hunger, hurt or otherwise distressed the spray will likely just anger the bear and it might attack. It's actually legal to carry a gun on state park trails if you have a concealed permit in TN. I have a hand gun but no concealed permit. This may change. It would be awful to be faced with the decision to use it but given the alternative it would be better to have it with me. I also camp alone so there's the whole human aspect too.

It's a bear!!!!

Guten griefen! ( that's my piss poor German) Are you feeding it?

Absolutely not. That only conditions them to people. Not a good thing.

@jeshuey
Smart man. I've seen them conditioned then killed. It makes me sick.

What a handsome bear ! Enjoy it's quiet presence, and quell those who are prone to mindless and unwarranted panic.

I've had them run over my tent with me in it. As long as you don't smell like food, you are pretty much safe.
