"During many ages there were witches. The Bible said so. The Bible commanded that they should not be allowed to live. Therefore the Church, after eight hundred years, gathered up its halters, thumb-screws, and firebrands, and set about its holy work in earnest. She worked hard at it night and day during nine centuries and imprisoned, tortured, hanged, and burned whole hordes and armies of witches, and washed the Christian world clean with their foul blood.
Then it was discovered that there was no such thing as witches, and never had been. One does not know whether to laugh or to cry.....There are no witches. The witch text remains; only the practice has changed. Hell fire is gone, but the text remains. Infant damnation is gone, but the text remains. More than two hundred death penalties are gone from the law books, but the texts that authorized them remain."

Barbara Ehrenreich wrote about this years ago. The treatment of women has basically just gone underground in many places. I do not remember the book but it was quite interesting as it stated just how many women hae been lost to this ignorance.

-Many people throughout the world still believe in witches, and in many cases torture, exorcise them, jail then and kill them.
The last witch trail in the UK was in 1954, witchcraft only ceased to be illegal in the USA in 1973 and in Australia it was repealed as a crime to tell fortunes in 1979.
Islam still condemns witches and magic users in Saudi Arabia you can still be executed for it, in India it is the same as Hinduism also condemns witches, there are five other countries Christian and otherwise were witchcraft is a capital offence, In Romania it is a taxable and licensable occupation, Iran has laws forbidding witches from interfering in government and politics, it is not a capital offence but you can be imprisoned for it, it is illegal in almost every African country to be a witch and in the Central African republic flying a broomstick in a designated commercial airspace is an offence for which you can be imprisoned.
Most Christian church denominations still acknowledge practising witchcraft as a forbidden activity, tantamount to apostasy and in many including Catholicism and Mormonism with be considered grounds for excommunication.
The Torah acknowledges the existence of witches and forbids their presence in Hebrew communities.

Other capital scriptural offence still proliferate all over the world, mostly to do with adultery, homosexuality and Blasphemy.

And it never will change. Remember it is the infallible word of god. Many people will simply ignore them in secular societies until the societies should once again revert to a theocracy and the old laws will be revived once again. See what we have to look forward to USA.
