Nice to give each other gifts because we like each other, not because we have judged others to be deficient and needing a fish OR needing to be taught how to fish.

That said, a few modest, well-managed social programs seem desirable. IMO, the ultimate social program would be a guaranteed subsistence income for everyone, funded by a massive public trust fund invested in stocks and bonds.

If everyone knows how to fish how will fishermen make a living ????

@Morganfreeman so what about people in wheel chairs , the blind , ms suffered , cancer victims the list goes on???

@Morganfreeman wtf are you talking about ?

I smoke so yes I give homeless people money or cigarettes, depending.
By teaching someone, in this day and age you're only slightly putting them in a better position. I don't disagree that you should teach but I do believe that a good majority will still need assistance of some sort.

Sounds like Ayn Rand type philosophy. At the same time, I don't think charity is the answer.

@Beach_slim

I disagree. There is no need for charity in a civilised world. And what is 'forced' charity?

@Beach_slim

The tent cities in the US are great. Selfishness is great. And if you think other people don't count, then neither do you.

It makes it easy to know who to block. Thanks.

@Beach_slim That's not what those are. They have definitions for a reason.

@Ellatynemouth Charity is like treating a gunshot wound. The better solution would be to prevent the gunshot in the first place. But once someone has been shot...

@DonThiebaut

Yes. I would like to see a society whereby everyone has enough money to buy their own food. To do away with food banks and soup kitchens, which paint the poor as feckless livestock.. And to take gratitude out of the equation.

@Ellatynemouth Well said

I have to say it, I am that guy! And what's more, I am backed up by our local charities for the homeless. We are advised to NOT to give money to those begging on the street but instead give to organised homeless charities who don't just hand out a meal but try to get people back on their feet by educating them on where and how to get proper social housing and benefits to enable them to settle back into life and fend for themselves (teaching them how to fish). @DonThiebaut if your response is anything like the rude, insulting and aggressive responses you gave to the original guy, then don't expect a reply, I don't engage in those type of school yard arguments.

So you give money to charities that both provide immediate relief and long term education? Sounds like you're not that guy. But thanks for painting me as the bad guy for supporting the charities and social aid programs you support.

Drumpster!

2

You have my word, that could never happen.

What could never happen?

^^^ @DonThiebaut Your post says "Please don't be this guy."

@CaroleKay I hope that's what Sticks means. Never can be too careful. Best to let a person clarify

Of course, Sticks is awesome. One of the best ♥

@DonThiebaut. Carole got it. l won't be that guy. ?
.

@Sticks48 Glad to hear it! ?

@DonThiebaut ?

Ah, the 12 year old boy, libertarian utopia fantasy where there is plenty for all should they just do the work to have it. Such utter bullshit, and a very poor, thinly veiled excuse for greed as the epitome of their morality. Or lack thereof. ie. assholes

Nailed it.

@NotAndrew Ah, I thought the fantasy used to justify the outright greed had ever so slightly more veil. My bad.

I wonder who , if he voted in 2016, voted for.

What’s wrong with giving the fish while teaching? This person is irrational. Helping some is destroying them? This guy is an ass.

Exactly.

They’ve probably read too much Ayn Rand unironically. I’m willing to bet money that on at least one social media platform they have compared themselves to one of Rand’s characters.

@Prescott one paragraph of her is too much.

Update 1.
This is a guy I had previous run-ins with. He ascribes to a far-right libertarian ideology that preaches for removing any and all social aid programs, and has said worse. Here's our convo, after he decided to wave his anonymous status. I got a bit heated.

Update 2

People like this are always convinced they would be the ones at the top in a libertarian hellscape. Funny how none of them ever think they would fit in with the bottom feeders in that scenario, which would be much more likely statistically speaking.

8

How about some thoughts and prayers. That always works so well.

4

It’s a heartless excuse to not care.

Exactly. Give him a fish, and teach him to fish, but don't pretend that withholding aid makes you better. ?

@befree01 What do you mean?

6

What a jerk.
