Are many alien fantasies just atheistic/agnostic substitutes for religious deities?

More often than not the concept of intelligent alien life comes in a guise of a creature that bares a degree of resemblance with humans, other mammals or other creatures known to humans.

Furthermore the behaviour displayed by these aliens also seems to be aligned with similar patterns detectable on Earth.

As humans we tend to make Gods and Aliens act and look like us. It is in our nature.

I guess that our imagination is limited by what we can identify. So we can only dream up combinations of the known.
Somehow it is rather dissatisfying to imagine that some alien rocks up and then turns out to be rather pedestrian.

@PontifexMarximus We like to say and hink that our imaginations are limitless and they can or could be, but actually in most instances we are quite narrow minded. Just a very unflattering observation.

@DavidLaDeau We think to highly of ourselves

Well, Carl Sagan said that UFOism is where science and religion truly meet. You have the universe, science, with aliens with wonders from "above" coming down like heavenly creatures. Of course he didn't mean to be a good thing. I agree, but I sure would like to know the explanation of all those mysterious things that people are filming in HD in droves now with their mobile phones, something that didn't exist in a quality form even a decade ago. Any reasonable terrestrial explanation is welcome. Instead the authorities have given up blaming the planet venus, meteors, and the usual suspects and just ignore the events hoping no one will notice. Never A Straight Answer NASA just edit their feeds and whistle Dixie, again hoping no one looks. When the events are witnessed by whole cities and the big media is deluged, they make a big joke of it, or bring in laughing boy Neil DeGrasse Tyson to do his "it ain't nothin folks" routine. Well, fine, and I don't jump to unfounded conclusions, but I still would like a goddam explanation for the stuff that people see, photograph and film.

There is a saying: Paper is patient. I would add and so is film or other recording devices. UFOs certainly exist, but most of them were launch from our planet. When I see a plane, as a non expert, I can only states that it is a plane, an unidentified plane, well not further identitified by me.
We all like some mystery in our lives.
