Will religion ever become obsolete?
What events do you foresee that could speed religion's demise?
What could we do to "coax" religion into extinction?

Neil deGrasse Tyson:

Neil has great insight.

Religion has been obsolete since the invention of Science. It used to have value by uniting a community with common stories, but now is holding humanity back by keeping us believing in falsehoods. The ignorance and bigotry of needs to go away for humanity to advance. What will speed religion's demise is the smart phone. Religion is based on ignorance, and people now have correct answers literally in the palm of their hands. What we can do is to stop hiding. Be vocal about not accepting the absurdity and immorality of religion.

I've always believed religion is in a life/death struggle with Science. Religion is a dead end, but Science is expanding and growing and will eventually eclipse religion.

No it'll never be obsolete, there will always be people who want it to be someone else's fault. Many people can't stand being an animal so are looking for an excuse for everything that happens.
There is no point in trying to eradicate , it keeps them happy so let them delude themselves.
The existence of has no affect on me, my life or my understanding of the world.

Decent, reality-based education should do it. But until the goons with religious agendas can be wheedled out of policy-making positions, we're all kind of stuffed.

Wouldn't it be great to see a time come about where religious indoctrination is considered socially unacceptable? ...Or a time when declared belief in deities scuppers a person's chance of getting into political office as much as if they went about saying they believe in fairies?

HEY!!! I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES!!! THIS IS BLASPHEMY.

Can you prove they Don't exist, you can't prove, can you?. SO THEY MUST EXIST.

John Lennon said, at least they exist in mine.

Great comment....IMO the media helps to keep religion alive. If the media would treat religion in a truthful way people would not so easily be brainwashed.

@nicknotes I think the media keeps a whole lot of thoroughly awful stuff going. They tap into the mass opinion, however ugly or dim-witted and poke at it like a wasps' nest... It's little more than the behaviour of a playground bully, monetised.

I suppose the first thing would be to fire Betsy DeVos.

People are afraid, that's all there is to it. I can't imagine being so afraid of something that isn't real...

I imagine that there are people who are afraid of hell. I think most people realize that it is not real...but why do they stick with their phony religions?

The religions have them brainwashed into believing they will die for sure and be punshished if they don't......like I mentioned. I'm glad I'm not afraid of something that is imaginary

I believe that as long as people need something to explain the randomness of this existence we will have religion. They can't accept that shit happens. Nope it is part of some beings great design.

2

Religion will not be abolished. Although at the rate I 'm studying non- believers are the fastest growing group. Where I hear most people say they are Spiritual rather than Religious. My educated guess that most people will not be Religious, when I leave this earth.

Religion is a dead end.

Christians believe that atheism will become extinct. I never had that thought before!

Atheism is on the rise...Christianity is waning.

I don't think "religion" will ever totally disappear. If you look at nearly all of human history, there have been supernatural beliefs to explain things, and those beliefs have simply evolved. And there is a level of comfort in believing in an afterlife for many folks. or the idea that we're not alone, that something is out there helping us... these ideas change but I doubt they will ever totally disappear.

I hope you are wrong. Religion is an evil force in our world.

2

I think religion will exist as long as humans exist. Evolution could possibly change that.

At the end of the day, religion will exit as long as man fears death. The key to eliminating religion is eliminating death. Unfortunately, we're pretty far off from that still.

Interesting premise...people say they believe because they fear death.

@nicknotes I don't think they admit that, consciously. Even to themselves. It's all control of the situation and fear of the unknown/nothing. But beneath the surface, that would be my guess.

@Kimberlydale79 I think you are right.
