Couldn't help but notice there are at least three places where segregation by race persists in the USA: (1) the barber shop or beauty parlor, (2) the funeral home, and (3) some fundamentalist churches. Have I missed any? And what do you make of this situation?
Being a Brit in Australia I am appalled. It sounds like something out of a Monty Python script! I thought segregation at that level disappeared decades ago. It would never be condoned in Australia and you'd get a good old Aussie confrontation if you tried it!
@RobLawrence thanks for educating me Rob. That makes the 'Man in Charge' ominously divisive as well as being a complete buffoon
VFW and AMVET halls, at least the ones I attend euchre tournaments at in Michigan. There's discrimination against atheists as well, see the scan attached. This is part of the membership contract—you have to sign and agree to this—if you wish to become a member. Then during the induction ceremony you have to verbally pledge the same. I don't know how this can be legal, these are not private organizations.
Jesus, what's God got to do with that?
@RobLawrence Of course. I forgot that God is on America's side. I wonder whose side he was on in the Civil War. Bit of existential angst there for the Evangelical's Almightyship!
Hair is very personal, I know I'd want the person "doing whatever" to my hair to understand my hair.
Undertakers and churches? People congregate in these for comfort.
@RobLawrence
I'd think that was rather self explanatory
Basically, what one needs to feel reasonably comfortable is a sense of familiarity, a sense that what has and will happen isn't going to be very much outside of that person's experience.
Seg·re·ga·tion
ˌseɡrəˈɡāSH(ə)n/Submit
noun
the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people or things or being set apart.
"the segregation of pupils with learning difficulties"
the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment.
"an official policy of racial segregation"
It seems like the things/places you mention are self inflicted separations...
Since they are not 'Forced' I think maybe the word might be "separations"...
I think no one is saying "you can't have your hair cut here..." (Though that May be a specialization)
I think self segregating groups (jews etc)
Are VERY different from forced 'segregation'...
I don't think segregation is the correct term.
You are observing people of different races preferring different service specialties.
There's no 'white folk hair only" sign at my (Mexican) hairdressers salon.
@RobLawrence segregation is simply the wrong word.
You are referring to 'personal preference'.
It's like you are saying beauty parlors and barber shops promote sexual discrimination.
Segregation makes it sound like the racial separation was imposed upon them by an outside source, but damned if I can think of a better word. I've noticed it too, but I figure it's because like attract like and sometimes minorities want to have their space without white people muscling in on it. I just operate on the assumption that I'm not allowed in there unless invited and move along. Especially when it comes to hair. Black hair needs different treatment than other kinds of hair and someone who is well-versed in one kind but not the other may accidentally do harm. Mine's not typical white hair, so I go to places that have a mix of races and ethnicities.
Racial segregation is the separation, either by law or by action, of people of different races in all manner of daily activities, such as education, housing, and the use of public facilities.
So, "segregation" is not an appropriate word for hair salons, funeral parlors or chruches. Those are governed by personal preferences. There are no barriers based on race there.
@Photog true, it's just not really an accurate word.
Klan, white supremist and Nazi rallies.
I Know! Huh!
I think it is really shitty the way those Black folks won't allow us white people to their Klan Rallies!
They are soooo secretive you can never find info about them!
I hear they got ALL Different colors of sheets and hoods too!
Its just WRONG And Not Fair!
Working with some types of hair is a specialty not everyone is competent to deal with. I once idiotically had my hair wrecked in a black hair salon. It took months and hundreds of dollars to repair. Awful.
@sarahjustme Yes the guy who spent over a year getting it to not look fried wasn't at a super cuts. He wasn't cheap.
So yeah. Also my hair's not been quite the same since. Went from sheena of the jungle hair to .... not that.
