Read and learn, especially seek the knowledge you are missing.

When the riots and anger over Michael Brown seemed way out of proportion I figured I must have missed something. So I got a couple of books on the race riots of the 70s. The anger and the distrust of the legal system seems perfectly reasonable after gathering a little background. Be aware and mayby even empathetic to the issues. I now stand around and be a witness when I see cops and minorities interact, keep both sides honest.

Yes. It's important to keep an open mind about problems like this. One must try to learn more about the issue, and to try and get a better understanding of both (or all) sides of the argument.

Too many people don't really bother to learn about the various sides of race, and other issues. Too often, people don't know appreciate the simple fact that they could be misinformed or not informed enough, and they fail to question the things they grow up learning and those ideas they've long held and feel comfortable with.

I hear ya. When you have no money, no power, no connexions, what can you do? No amount of 'realising' this and 'admitting' that is going to change anyone's life circumstances. Really, it's like praying. It only benefits the person doing it.

@Renickulous that's what I mean, though. Realising and admitting and whatnot isn't going to ease the effects of racism on minorities. Me knowing this is a problem that I'm not affected by isn't going to magically make cops stop shooting black people.

I'm agreeing with you in that we need concrete directions as to what to do, not think or believe or say, but do, to solve this problem. I'm glad some folks have been posting useful answers, hopefully they're things people with nothing can do.

even getting people who don't understand it is a thing to consider it would be a step

Burn it. Two of my best friends were/ are native american, and cuban. They often feared speaking up, as they were minorities. I wasn’t, so did. I burn my ‘privilege,’ speaking honestly to the majority I’m apparently a part of. So I’ve never felt that ‘privileged,’ as I’m constantly treading unstable ground supporting issues they’d rather see go way..

One of those two friends, though, has always played into the majority mold. If you didn’t look close, or know better - you’d think him more ‘privileged’ than me 😉

@Renickulous Here’s one - become a radical Atheist! Take that supposed privilege and societal safety and picket some churches. Tax This Church! - and see how far your ‘white privilege’ gets you.. That’s the stuff I’ve done, because, as described above, my ‘non white’ best friends either couldn’t, or wouldn’t.

@Renickulous Churches receiving services they’re not taxed for is wrong - but it remains legal. So protest.

...I’m not sure what you’re getting at.. I say anyone feeling they’ve less fear of prosecution or persecution due to the fact their ‘skin color’ resembles that of local authorities, thus the majority, should (as I’ve done in life) use that so-called privilege to make change for the better. Once you have, and realize they’ll come down on you almost as hard as someone ‘of color’ - you’ve entered the Twilight Zone ~

Use it to protect others. Use it to change to world for the better. Experience other cultures and appreciate them. Acknowledge it and try to change it.

@Renickulous when you figure it out let me know cause I ain't got a clue

Stop believing you were a forgotten demographic and got left behind by Washington. You, as a group made lifestyle choices in which things like education were deemed of little value to you and your families. You,'ve been offered training on more than one occasion and by more than one Administration and turned it down.. As a group you (most noteably middle income white males, for which I am one) need to put on their big boy pants, suck it up, and realize demographics are changing. The changes for the first time are beginning to reflect the actual demographics represented in this country. You've been in control of the power base for more than 300 years, it's time to share. Only then will white privilege recede and disappear.

@Renickulous. 1. Quit taking oneself so serious, 2. realize the changing demographics are a natural consequence of the growtth of population. 3. share the power, and 4. make sure your kids don't make the same mistake your generation did and get a good education. The rest will straighten itself out. Does that work?

Deeds. If yer white, don't be a dick about it.

@Renickulous I think we need to acknowledge their own understanding of themselves and respect what they come up with. Us offering a solution is patronizing

@Renickulous whites

@Renickulous you started the conversation re white privilege. that is what I am addressing. You are changing the subject. If you want to assume that you understand other people's realities better than they do go right ahead.

@Renickulous this is distortion. Have a good day

Realizing this world and this country and multi-cultural. Whites should recognize they are not the Master Race as Herr Trump believes. Diversity ofraces, religions, ethnic backgrounds and inclusion ofLGBTQ is a beautiful thing. There is and should not be "white privlege."

Getting white people to admit its existence is the first step.

And the hardest.
