I read The Handmaid's Tale when it first came out in 1985 and it scared the shit out of me then. The story stayed with me. As the religious "fundamentalism" or evangelical movement seems to be gaining power and the shit storm in Washington, it keeps coming to mind. I read that one of the reasons the Republifucks want to limit birth control is to have an eager, desperate workforce. What would it be like if the religious freaks gain control.... Luckily I can still quote scripture, my time as a bible study leader and a memory for useless trivia may serve me well. I haven't seen the TV show, I think it would kick my anxiety levels through the roof.
