Today the Supreme Court (thanks entirely to Mitch McConnell’s 2016 refusal to allow any consideration of President Obama’s choice for the late Antonin Scalia’s vacant seat) took the country further into the gathering twilight. In a significant step towards autocratic rule, its 5-4 majority ruling in essence its hands the President the power, under the guise of protecting national security, to put in place any policy he chooses.

Today’s ruling upholds a travel ban targeting countries with which the Trump Organization has no business dealings, as it ignores Pakistan and Saudi Arabia (two major sponsors of terrorism - fourteen of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers were Saudis) but it will have clear consequences, the most obvious of which, aside from emboldening Trump to push for ever more racist immigration policies, is serving as ready-made propaganda in the radicalization of Muslim opposition to the US and the West. It also signals to Muslims across the world that America has little regard or use for them or, presumably, their role as the most important source of information on extremist Muslim terrorist groups.

There's certainly a lot to digest in this decision. Apparently his wording on this third attempt was enough to convince justices to pass it. At the heart of it, though, am I to understand that it entrusts the President with the sole authority to decide which groups to ban, which to pass? If true, THAT would be the most frightening aspect of this. The decision itself was supposed to be based on the travel ban proposal alone (ignoring Trumps verbage).
WTH is happening in this country? Roberts has a history of fairness, I can only hope he retains that going forward. I guess it's Kennedy who's morphing into a monster.

Sadly, I think that it was less that the wording on this was convincing than five justices simply bent legal logic into a pretzel in order to support their finding. Given The Donald's past tweets and comments on many occasions, his intent in seeking to pass this "travel ban" was to exclude, first and foremost, Muslims (while not ruffling Saudi Arabian feathers or impacting his own business holdings).

Unfortunately, the horse is out of the barn as far as the Supreme Court is concerned. Unless some members have a serious change of heart, we are in for many years of Conservative rulings.
