My dad brought us up with the idea that there were "men's jobs" and "women's job" and he gave us girls no training in what was supposed to be in his mind a "men's job". When I was married the ex did take on most of the "men's jobs", or paid someone else to do them. Or bitched about doing them and making 23 trips to the hardware store. Being single and living alone has been a challenge because I don't like to ask the kids to do very much. So tonight I tackled a job that really should have required two "men." My idiot cat that I adore had taken to jumping to the top of the TV, and I was afraid she'd knock it over. Modern TVs don't have the heft that the older ones did, this one is about 35 pounds. So today I bought a wall mount, and tonight my TV is firmly attached to the wall. Tomorrow I may have sore arms, I'm not used to hefting and maneuvering that much weight. Working on cars was one of the things dad wouldn't teach his girls, and no, I have never changed my own oil.

I agree wall mounts for new televisions need 3 hands for ease of installation. ...when I did mine I was in love with a modern woman geek engineer knew all 8 color coded wires to modem satellite et al and had in her tool box a stud finder I did not have....her dad was also an engineer but not sexist. ...so I did the sore muscles parts and she did the supervising and approving of exactly where to drill. ...a childless woman felt I was disposable 8 years later

I am sorry for your loss of relationship. I like the rest of the comment before. Hopefully the 8 years you had with her had some good parts.

Single since 2012

YouTube is the best thing on the planet! All you need to do is type in the search window what you're trying to do and at least 100 people have made a how to video! I've yet to be disappointed

Both my parents were the opposite of yours. They were of the opinion that life skill were not gender oriented us boys were taught to cook, clean and do laundry and my sister were given the opportunity to fix machinery, build and repair things. We were all taught to drive and thus to change oil, tires, batteries and make simple automotive repairs. Could be because we lived on a farm that they were like this but, I am of the opinion that it was because they felt these things were something everyone should have.

Lucky you!! My dad did laundry, but we girls had to fold it and put it away. To this day I loathe folding tighty whiteys.

Good Job! I was raised by a single mother who had to do the jobs of "man" and "woman", so I learned to do most all of it. I just remodeled the majority of my basement (removing 70's paneling, texturing, window/floor molding w/miter joints, the whole 9 yards) with only a little help from a man (my ex-husband, who also never believed a woman can do "mans" work. I only think he helped with one miter joint project because he couldn't believe I completed another one on my own. -a substantially larger mitering project. lol). I have also never changed my own oil.
