As the Christian religion is disintegrating (more and more splinter groups), people still need heroes to emulate or look up to. Don't ask me why -- I have no idea why this is important. Since the old gods and demons don't fill that need, people make up new stuff. It would be interesting to come back in 1,000 years and see the Superman is a god, Captain America a force for good.

If you read stuff like Miracle Man and New Gods, a lot of this stuff ends in tears. I think it's a trope conducive to parables. What is too much power? What is control?

I'm not familiar with miracle man and new gods. Are these something you'd recommend? Favorites of yours? Looking at someone's bookshelves reveals alot. And you asked good questions too. Power and control. Both in life and as a theme in fiction. In life it seems we have so littke, and in these fictions the characters sometimes wrestle with these issues. Coolio.

@Candyland New Gods is Jack Kirby unleashed to his full potential in the DC universe. Published in the '70s, I imagine there are compilations of reprints available. Miracleman I remember from the '80s was my intro to Alan Moore.

@Hicks66 I'm coming to this all late in life. Kirby did the darker Batman stuff, right? While I have not read his comics, I gave seen and very much like the artwork. Not a lot of this in my local library...

@Candyland Frank Miller did the Batman stuff. Kirby was a bridge between the Golden and Silver Ages of comics. Think early Fantastic Four for instance.

Have you seen the second movie yet? I highly recommend it, superior to the first.
