Name calling and cursing at someone is not effective in a healthy debate. So why are they such common tactics used in today's society? Wouldn't you rather try to pursuade someone that your opinion is right, rather than belittling them?

My strategy in an argument/debate is try to consider what the more effective thing to say is. I've come to realize that hostile comments are counter-productive. They tend to cement their target into opposition and also empower them with the knowledge that they have upset you - and are important enough to you that you are upset.

Because what you say is true, but his followers have no idea about intelligent conversation or being a human being.

I have no problem cursing to get my point across - as in a generic post about how shitty our president is. Telling me my point is bullshit doesn't make me want to hear your viewpoint - that's what makes no sense to me.

Because when it comes to morality, there is no right or wrong in which to win an argument.

Those tactics are rare on this forum, thankfully. Using your real name and location keeps a person civil, and I think that should be the standard for all on-line forums.

I posted this specifically because I have been insulted in this forum, and it was from someone trying to convince me of their opinion. Once you insult me, I am not interested in what you have to say. If you treat me with respect, I am more than open to hearing an opposing view.

@Hihi Ooh, I hope it wasn’t me that offended you.

@WilliamFleming nope!

@Hihi People naturally put up a wall when they are attacked, so I have no idea why anyone would even start a debate by immediately attacking...once that wall is up, nothing gets through...I would say to leave that conversation and save your strength for others who are more open and willing to truly respect your opinions even if they disagree.

@Akfishlady Some people seem to thrive on controversy more than others, I guess. I have enough stress in my real world. I don't need to go searching for it, haha.

This is more an issue in America I feel as you are 'generally speaking' raised on 'smack talk' with every competition. It's a mentality to berate the opposition before and after a competition or debate in.ordet to achieve some kind of mental advantage. Something that always gets me back up as it just comes across as pathetic.
Note this is not meant as a racist thing, just an observation and may just be something that is portrayed incorrectly.

Just playing devil's advocate here: how would you persuade someone who believes every word out of your mouth is Fake News?

There is no point in even having the conversation with some people.

Sometimes being a dick is called for and l have no problem going there. If rationality and honest discourse worked this planet would not be the fucked up place it is.

It's the only thing Trump supporters understand.

For me, it is the result of frustration after presenting the facts to a trump supporter and they call you a liar.

Because deep down the are not confident enough in their opinion, whether they are right or wrong, it takes real conviction and knowledge to be certain of something

@Storybook you are right but some people havent learnt to discuss a topic properly and are just really out to make a point without thinking about others point of view . Its kinda why we have people claiming there are just far left or far right people when in reality most people are around the middle

I think it is the sign of low intelligence and a very limited vocabulary!

Oh &#!* you.

@chucklesIII I like it!

Actually, using curse words is a sign of higher intelligence. It also tends to be a more honest and transparent form of communication. I have quite a large vocabulary. If I take the time to use the "50-cent" words, you will find it a worse and more humiliating experience and you'll end up wishing I'd used the briefer, curse words instead.

Same here. I'd rather make waves with a few well placed curse words than get the blank expressions I often get when I use my well honed vocabulary. They're so cute when they tilt their heads to try and decide whether I've insulted them or not. ?

2

@Hihi Agree 100%

Oh, when I get through with them they'll either want me to explain what I said or they will know they have been thoroughly insulted despite not knowing some of the words I've sued. Hence, they'll end up preferring the curse words! 😀
