How do you store your hard copy music (CD, DVD, vinyl) - if you have any - by genre, alphabetically or otherwise.

I used to be pure alphabetically but now I am mixing it up.

What about you?

I swing between alphabetically in genre and just all alphabetically, with a group at the end that are random and various. At the moment they are in the latter permutation (lols).

Good one. Just along as I can find what I am looking for...

It is mostly jazz. I simply put it on the shelf.

Very laissez faire and representative of jazz.

So you improvise and free associate? 🙂

Alphabetical by artist's name.

I don't think there is a tag for autobiographical in any database.

Since 'by genre' is not a functional sort -- it has changed quite a lot over the decades. Blues today is not blues from the 50's or 60's. Heavy Metal, Metal, Alternative seem confused about what they are -- no clear definition. I sort alphabetically. I use my definitions for genres only on my iPod.

When I was in my 20s, "alternative" was a valid descriptor. REO Speedwagon, for instance, was not alternative (and remains not). Genres develop and change, as you say. My Keith Jarrett CDs sit with John Coltrane, but they have little in common.

I am pure alphabetical.

I am terrible with labels of all sorts. I just ignore them. So sorting by genre is not gonna happen.

That is my default, but I am doing some alternative deployment in my new house.

I go by genre, then roughly chronologically (grouped by artist/composer).

Ooooh, that is getting High Fidelity, most def.

@Palindromeman damn you, I was going to post that. You beat me to it.

@novoxguy Sorry dude!

in my loft.

But how do you know how to find your Joni Mitchell?

@Palindromeman I ask Alexa to play Joni Mitchell and she finds her for me on my Amazon music account!

@Cassiopeia I'm strictly a CD guy. Once I get a turn table I will go full nerd.

@Palindromeman um... CDs don’t on turntables, that’s vinyl 🙂 I can go for a walk with my phone in my pocket, pop on my headphones and I have a world of music to listen to.

@Cassiopeia Oh, I got that completely wrong... doofus! I know the difference between CD and vinyl.

I just don't dig on iTunes. Call me a Luddite.

Alphabetically. But I also keep my tv shows and movies separate.

Of course. It's like cats and dogs, they need to be separate.

1

Alphabetically.
Nothing else is acceptable.
It would make my OCD hurt.

Traditionally I did too. Now I am in an experimental phase.

@Palindromeman We "experiment" with what we can.
For me, it's the spices in the kitchen. Instead of alphabetically, I
store them by which ones I use most often. Poor cloves, relegated
to the back of the pack. 😛

@KKGator Ooooh, we have to be careful with cloves, they are pungent!

I have a huge market basket that I keep my current favorites, or music that I want to listen to over the next few weeks...I just toss them in and every so often, I find the covers and match them up, file them back alphabetically (ha ha...in my mind)...start all over...but in reality, I mostly just use Amazon Prime Music and tell Alexa what I want to hear...

I can give you some recommendations if you are interested.

@Palindromeman That would be lovely! Music is such a big part of my life...I tend to simply stumble onto not so mainstream music, and wish I had more time to explore. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

@thinktwice Okay, give me some directions - what genres appeal to you?

@Palindromeman anything except country...I like classical music, heavy metal, vintage rock and roll, but I am interested more in new artists...except for the late night shows, I don't really know who the new musicians are...I have been following your posts, so I could start there on my own...you know how YouTube is...you start one and then go off in all sorts of lovely directions so I don't need a lot...give me a few newbies you like! You have good taste so far!

@thinktwice Okies.

Emma Russack -

All Our Exes Live In Texas. I would not describe them as country:

Just a quick two, but plenty more to come. I have to make a library and book.
