WEDDING PROPOSAL.

OK...I was discussing with a friend her son wedding proposal to his girlfriend.
He proposed to the girl IN FRONT OF 50+ PEOPLE. The girl almost fainted, was red on the face the entire rest of the afternoon and embarrassed to no end. He was laughing because "he surprised her".
The guy's mother can't understand why the girl was embarrassed and doesn't want to hear any reason.

Guys...why some of you propose in public? I believe Is an early sign oF "I don't care what she feels...I do things my way."

I often wonder why some men do it...especially without thinking it through....

Firstly you will put the girl on the spot in public..leaving her embarrassed and possibly humiliated..

Secondly she could say NO.. Leaving both of you embarrassed and humiliated...

My friend's son is so narcissistic he will never think she would say "NO". The fact is she didn't say NO or YES. Few days later she told him NO.

@DUCHESSA

Oh dear...

@Hitchens This morning I called my friend and asked a detail that worried me deeply....yes, he even went down on his knee to propose.. Pathetic.

Because, if you're not sure someone wants to waste their entire life on you, why not try to embarrass them into it?
Many years ago I was at a party; we were all given champagne and told to wait expectantly for an important announcement. A couple we knew were absent from the room. A few moments later the woman came back into the room looking embarrassed and said "nothing to see, get back to having fun, put some music on". A few years later they did get engaged, but this was not the way to do it.

We agree the guy is an asshat. I’d posit he got the attitude from his mother. That young woman needs to run away fast because it’s only going to get worse.

His mother is a decent person but sees nothing wrong with her ONLY son. I am just about the only person who can tell her what's is crooked with him.

@DUCHESSA I understand you like her, but the decent thing to do would have been to refuse to attend the surprise party. Or, if she didn’t know about the proposal in advance, she could express some empathy toward her future DIL. What does being decent mean if not to have compassion?

@UUNJ i always tell her that her 39 y/o son has never married / can't hold a good relationship thanks to the way she has risen him.

Like other's have said, social pressure on her, or his ego wants to be centre of attention, or both. Either way it is something she might clarify if it bothered her.

I wonder if she said yes, and whatever she said, how she felt after? I read she was embarrassed; was that because of surprize, or was it something else which made her uncomfortable? That's the question she needs to answer, and resolve, or it could affect her entire life.

Perhaps he wasn't confident of her answer being positive so he used social pressure to make sure she said yes instead of no. That's manipulative and dishonest and she would be wise to rethink her answer after having some time to mull his proposal over after the 'surprise'.

My personal opinion about the guy (I know him since 2001) is that he is and arrogant pig.

You are expressing the same reasons i presented to my friend.
