When I retired early at age 60 from a main job of 25 years and soon after someone want to hire you under the table and keep you busy taking my time and energy and the compensation seems to be OK but they need more of your time and things start to get tight on there end because of so much going in there business they start to take longer to pay me or just say they forgot to pay me. I've gone longer then a month with out a paycheck from them and they keep saying they are getting back on track for paying me. They never have got back on track. They blame the book keeper the book keeper tells me everything is alright I will get paid. When questioning the owners of the business they blanket me with it's my fault and don't ask about it anymore. I guess I know what I have to do and that is just leave and don't look back.

In the USA there are Labor Boards that will see you get paid...just on your documentation, and/or you can go to Small Claims Court. Remember to say you were going to declardd the income on your tax forms!

They sort of have you by the short hairs since you agreed to work under the table. If you turn them in, then you are going to have to own up to paying taxes and possibly affecting your social security income (if you are collecting). Do you have anything in writing? Do you have time cards or invoices you have given to them. You could be considered an independent contractor and like any vendor, sue in small claims court for payment....but again, did you report the income? I would get whatever proof of work you have and confront them directly. Just give them a deadline ...don't threaten. Ask them what the hold up is...could be they are waiting to be paid first. Remember that you have the rights to any work you have done that you have not been paid for...so depending on what you do for them, be sure to remove documents and such from the computer, etc. They can have them back after they pay you.

Chalk it up to a lesson learned. I wouldn’t work another day for them.

Chock?
