Simple question: What is the purpose of government? For me it is to allow for the pursuit of happiness but preventing harm to the greater good in the process. People and corporations can get rich but we must provide all that opportunity and a humane safety net for the rest because everyone can’t be rich.

I believe the only true purpose of government (which has been grossly perverted and expanded FAR beyond its original intent in the US) should be to provide the conditions in which its citizens can live happily and prosper. This can be done with a VERY simple set of laws:

  1. No person, group of persons, or government shall initiate force, threat of force, or fraud against any individual’s self, property, or contract.
  2. Force is morally-and-legally justified only for protection from those who violate #1.
  3. No exceptions shall exist for 1 and 2.

Government is a contract between individuals to act as a group and establish ground rules for conduct in common transactions. This is what it means to be of the people, for the people and by the people. Government governs with the consent of the people in the group so governed. When a government fails in its duty to the people it may be dissolved. Factioning within a government is healthy when mutual respect among the various factions is practiced. Civil war may result if two or more factions lose that mutual respect and one faction attempts to destroy, undermine or otherwise seeks to subvert the equal standing of another faction. Accordingly, governments that fail,to take care of their people as above cease to be governments. A system of laws creates the social contract that becomes the government. A legislative process is used to create the laws either by direct participation or be representation. An executive authority is tasked with carrying out the laws and a judicial review process is tasked with clarifying legislative intent, dispute settlement and assessing appropriate penalties for intentional noncompliance with those laws. These three functions act independent of one another and have equal standing with respect to the governed.

The purpose of government is national security.

to keep the status quo and fuck poor people in the ass

To organize the powerful's control over the weak, and help keep the weak from realizing the power in their numbers and overthrowing them

Of course people talk about the social contract where government protects your rights blah blah blah (hell, even I used to) but who infringes on others' rights more than government?

Governments should slowly be dismantled and replaced with freedom that also ensures security, e.g. arming the citizens against invasion

The purpose of government is as Aristotle defined it over 2000 years ago, to serve and provide the greater good for all the citizens. There is a reason people live in groups. There is a reason people live together and form cities and countries. People have recognized for all history that there is an advantage in living together rather than living apart. There is more to be gained from mutual cooperation than can ever be gained separately. The reason people form governments is to ensure and provide that mutual good for all equally.

The reason people group up is for the advantage and to satisfy the need for social contact of our species. Governments form when one person takes advantage of the group's nonviolence to assert control over them. What is the first kind of government in recorded history? Feudalism.

This is pretty close to the philosophical ideal, which is what I think the post is looking for.
