How is it that so many people believe in a god (or The God)?

When they're asked whether they believe, and they say yes, what makes them say yes? Is it because of their upbringing (friends and family)? Is it because of their belief in what their parents taught them? Is it because of the teachings of their church? Or rather, what keeps them from saying No?

Instinctive, non answer. Most people haven’t stopped to ask themselves ‘do I believe?’ They just say yes, of course.
