Dystheism: The belief that god is not wholly good. The Roman and Egyptian gods had good and bad traits, and so goes the Christian god. He repeatedly ordered genocide, and did it himself, for example.

The Abrahamic deity is generally presented as all-knowing, all-powerful, and all good. This is of course violated by many Biblical accounts of god's exploits. For example: if god is angered by sin, that means he is surprised and disappointed and threatened. If he's unhappily surprised, he's not all-knowing, and if he is threatened he's not all powerful. If god allows (much less decrees or inflicts) human suffering, as he often does in the Bible, he's either doesn't know about evil (isn't all knowing), isn't able to do anything about it (not all powerful) and/or, doesn't care (isn't benevolent and good and kind).

There are a minority of Christians who throw one or more of these "omni" attributes under the bus at least provisionally or in certain contexts. I have had conversations with believers who believe that god can do evil that good may come of it, because unlike us, he knows all the knock-on effects of any action he might take. A prominent rabbi wrote a book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People, that throws omnipotence under the bus to explain why god permits human suffering.

Ultimately even the Christian god is a fiction created by humans and reflects human foibles.

God was made in our image ?

I do not like to use the term God because it is an ambigious term. The term God derives from the term Zeus. The deity Zeus is the equavilent to the Hebrew deity Adonai who was a storm deity and lived on a mountain and hurled thunderbolts. Adonai is one of the many names of the Hebrew deity. His first being El/Saturn. Last being Yahweh 300B.C. The Jews will teach that the names are different manifestations of the deity. But they are really just the different names of the deity the Hebrews evolved. The Hebrews are well known for borrowing cosmological ideas and making them their own.

The deity of the old testament was a malvolent deity. This is well known. The jewish term Holocaust means burnt offering unto Yahweh.

Also, Jupiter comes from Zeus Pater, which means God the Father.

@Heraclitus

Exactly, jupiter is roman/latin.... The romans borrowed everything from the greeks, except the language. Greek and Latin are not related.

One can get more morality from the works of Theodor Greisel than they can get from any so called 'Holy book'.

Amen! 😉

To think about a belief in it's "goodness" or " badness" is still a belief in a non-existent thing. Just get a new hobby.......

Yes, we're talking about a fictional character from a fictional anthology. But the point is that a dystheistic god is like Darth Vader - he has good and bad traits.

@ldheinz IMO having to fall back on a fictional mouth-breather like Darth makes an excellent arguements for you to take up knitting or basketweaving or something, instead of spending your time thinking about this non-question and non-issue!

So @AnneWimsey, lacking any rational argument to support your position, you stoop to flinging baseless insults? That's just an admission that you've got nothing real to say. People talk about the fictional character of Jesus of Nazareth all the time.

@ldheinz and those people are fools, too.....

@AnneWimsey, why is it wrong to know what dystheism is? Why should people not know that Jesus is fictional?

@ldheinz you see how your precious Life is being frittered away right now by your insistence we discuss fairy tales AS IF they have relevance? Please stop!

@AnneWimsey, again, why is it wrong to know what dystheism is? If it shouldn't be discussed, why are you discussing it?

@ldheinz I give up, you win, we should discuss the importance of Goodness vs. Badness in various gawds until we reach some earth-shattering conclusions, like that Gawd reflects man, or they give comfort to the weak. All fabulously important in everyone's day, for sure.
Has anyone ever called you a Fathead, or may I be the first?

@AnneWimsey, yes, I've been insulted by stupid people for not being stupid my whole life.

@ldheinz that would be Your spin on it.....

It's a fairy story. A non existant being can't order anything.
