I do not understand why this country thinks Socialism is so bad. One aspect of Socialism is the sharing of wealth. This country has vast deposits of wealth, they are owned by Coorporations and individuals and held in offshore accounts. This does the people of this country no good, it really does not help the owners of this wealth. It just sits there. What would happen if the wages in this country were to raise to a place where one could minimally pay all their bill's, afford minimum payment for single payer health care, and save a little for the future. I have heard conservatives say that we all have to be free to provide for ourselves. This would be great, but there are circumstances when jobs just disappear or change. The fact that one is not working does not mean they are subhuman or worse. Being unemployed means there is no job for a person to do. We hear the unemployment level is less that 5% to this I say it is this level because the manner in which it is tracked has changed so that this number is reached. The real unemployment rate is about 12%. There are many people who are just not being counted anymore. Socialism exists for the rich, the government pays their taxes, provides benefits through acts of law, and makes sure they get what they want. We just gave them $1,500,000,000.00 to insure this. We were told this would trickle down to us. Where is it? One who posts on this site got a . 35 raise on each check, what percent of the gross amount is that. What is that going to do to help this persons life? If the money was put into Social programs it would have gone directly into the economy, not in the coffers of offshore accounts. We are told that if we all were able to thrive the economy would falter. I say biullshit, the movement of money through the economy makes for more money, putting money into the economy grows the economy. Any one who makes less than $30,000.00 a year puts all they have back into the economy, I used to make this and I could pay all my bills, no savings account, what is that, in order to have one you have to make more than it costs to live. If we shared more, spread more money around, we would all be better off. Just saying.

I thought social democracy with Keynesian economics was an ideal compromise in society. I hear that that economic model won't work in today's free-market economy.

I think we think socialism is synonymous with Communism. I think socialism is a great idea.

Hold on to that thought.....Mexico all things consider, has been doing well for the last 20 years in terms of investment, growth and job opportunities. They have just elected a hard core socialist. His inauguration is December 1st. Pay attention to this development. Give it enough time (two years minimum) to find out how good this particular type of socialism is going to do for them. It's not important if I am right or wrong, I am saying we have a great opportunity to see how this experiment will unfold right there in our own front door. Lets take notice and then get conclusions

I totally agree with you. I have lived in three different countries. A communist one, a social democratic one and now I live in a country that has a right wing government. It is the pits for the citizens, only the ones with money benefit and all the time they are trying to tighten everything for the workers. Having grown up in a social democratic country where taxes are hight, I can say that this is the one and only political ideology that is good for everybody. Rich and poor, the rich benefit that there is money in the economy and the poor benefit from having jobs and wages so they can live a decent life.

The reason they think it's so awful is because of years of right-wing propaganda against it, and equating it with Communist Russia, and other totalitarian regimes. They ignore the social democracies which are doing so well, and act like that's just the first step to hell.

Yep. There is/was a massive propoganda campaign that unfortunately worked all too well in the states.

This looks like it's being going on since the 50's as far as I can see. It's beyond propaganda, more like social conditioning. The thing is, for those at the top of the food chain the status quo works really well and I don't see things changing until they learn to give a shit. Vote them out, their replacements won't be any better (in this respect).

@Salo Then vote those bastards out. If people got together and placed a person to represent them in office and then that person did not represent them, it is called a sit in until the resign and you get to put someone else in. Once the people you vote for get tnhe message they will do what is wanted or they will be replaced. Take the money out of politics, and make it so taking money from a supported is illegal.
