“The first four historical books of the New Testament are supplied with titles [Gospel According to [Greek: kata] Matthew, According to Mark, etc.] which, however ancient, do not go back to the respective authors of those sacred writings... That, however, they do not go back to the 1st century of the Christian era, or at least that they are Not Original, is a position generally held at the present day... It thus appears that the titles of the Gospels are not traceable to the Evangelists themselves.” ~Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. vi, p. 655-656.

The authorship of all four are traditional, not actual.

Also, they are "the first four books" only because someone(s) decided to put them first. They are in fact among the LAST of the New Testament books to be written. Only The Revelation is newer. Pretend you know nothing of the New Testament and read the books in the order in which they were written, with no presuppositions from the gospels until you arrive at them chronologically. It is ... instructive to say the least.

Also they are in no way "historical" in nature. They are fabulist mythos about a miracle-working god-man; in what way is that "historical"? It's fan fiction.

Its things like these that cause the leaders of organized religion to teach the "faithful" not to question anything. Therefore they will not ponder deeply the fact that the Bible was written by politicians, not God.
