Travelling Solo!

Good evening ladies and Bruces - I just bought my airfare for a November trip to Sydney, AU. I'll be on a two week trip, by myself, in the land down under.

I've been out of the country once (Iceland) but was with a friend. This will be my first time vacationing alone and I wanted to ask:

  1. Do you have any suggestions for solo travel?
  2. Do you have any specific recommendations for Australia? I'm definitely trying to see GBR, but am open to suggestions, otherwise.

Thanks in advance!

The Barossa Valley - What Napa looked like 50 years ago.

Tasmania - California 50 years ago, and Hobart is a jumping off point for a great sea tour adventure.

Of course the normal tourist stuff - Ayers Rock, Sydney Harbor. BUT - Oz is the size of the US, you cannot do or see everything.

Just to whet your appetite, here's QF94 arriving from Los Angeles this morning ?

Do you hear that, @amdam87? It's the sound of my seething jealousy.

Have a grand time, ya bastard.

I would recommend The Rocks area of Sydney for your base. Lots of seafood restaurants and bars there and handy for the Bridge and Opera House, as well as the ferries to Bondi etc., as it is right on the harbour. Make the Whitsundays your base to visit the GBR......wish I was coming with you. Lots of happy memories of previous visits. Melbourne is also worth a visit, and the penguin colony at Philip Island but you won’t have enough time in two weeks!

Backpackers can be good as you'll meet fellow travellers, but keep an eye on your belongings, a couple of my mates went for a shower and when they got out their clothes had been pinched!

Hi, I can certainly help with Aussie travel advice.

If you only have two weeks and you are flying into Sydney plus you want to see the Great Barrier Reef then you won't have much time for side trips.

The weather in Sydney in November should be perfect. Allow a few days here to explore. Most of the cool stuff is in and around the harbour and can be reached by ferry. Definitely try and see Tooronga Zoo, Sydney Fish Market, Bondi Beach as well as touring the Opera House and doing the Bridge climb. If you have time to take a trip out to the Blue Mountains then do that too!

You can see the GBR from Cairns, Townsville or Proserpine. There are loads of tours and islands on the reef you can stay on (for a price). Consider basing yourself in Cairns because you can catch a boat out to the reef from there, or hire a car and drive up to Port Douglas and the Daintree rainforest region (spectacular part of the world and a lovely coast road to drive on.) You can also go inland for a more outback experience. Expect the weather up north to be humid and stormy in November - but you should be early enough to avoid cyclone season (but only just).

That's just a quick brain dump - feel free to ask anything!

I have a friend in Perth and friend in New South Wales. If I could afford to go, I would go with you. Enjoy yourself and come back with pictures and stories to share.

G'day mate! I did the whole east coast of Australia by train from Cairns to Melbourne by myself (a while ago but the places I saw/stayed are still around mostly)...I have lots of tips if you want to contact me. You need to try and get to New Zealand while you're way over there if you can

lerlo Level 8 Aug 6, 2018

I have heard New Zealand is very beautiful and it has like 2 parts. One gets colder than the other. I would like warm. I am going to have to read up on New Zealand.

@BettyColeman NZ s an amazing country with the same geographical sites that the US has but in a state the size of California. It has two islands the north island has Auckland the south island has Christ Church and the fjords

@lerlo
if it get must worse here in America. I am going to be looking for a country to adopt. I wonder what New Zealand's rules on re locators that are 70 years old but take care of myself! So I am not a cripple, just a senior. I might even go back to work wherever I move if they have jobs I can do. Thanks for answering.

@BettyColeman You should check the climate because I believe that it's just like Australia with summer when we have our winter and winter when we have out summer. Good luck. Belize speaks English and has a warm climate and it's closer...and probably cheaper...I've had similar thoughts but can't leave my 93 yr old father.

@lerlo I don't recommend Belize, it is not called the Mosquito Coast for nothing!

@Marionville [sanpedroscoop.com]

@Marionville Is Belize in the Canary Islands? Don't they have air conditioning in Belize?

@BettyColeman No, Belize used to be called British Honduras and is in Central America....the only English speaking country there. I would prefer Costa Rica of all the Central American countries if I was going to chose one to move to....of course they speak Spanish there!

@Marionville I could learn Spanish. I worked in Holland 6 months years sago. Of course their 2nd language is English, but the older people did not speak it so much. I had a small cottage in Egmund an Zee or Egmund by the sea. I was 2 blocks from the Black Sea. It was an amazing and entertaining / lovely experience. I was there for most of tulip[ season. My project came in 2 weeks ahead of schedule. t was one of those lifetime experiences. It is amazing just going to the grocery store is an adventure. Flowers so cheap you could have them in the house everyday. Amsterdam was great, but my heat was in the small villages. I had dinner one night in a 13th century castle that was a restaurant. What a hoot. Getting gas, just everything. I will always remember it. I am like the person with the elderly father. My mother is 88 yrs old and my yorkie is a senior. He could never survive the trip. He has arthritis. I have to pick him up and put him down. He wants to be near me and makes this hideous ranting noise all night long if he gets down for some reason, he will stand on the floor making that noise until he wakes me. So my life is kind of all crazy too. I wanted to go soon, but a woman hit me in my car so dealing with some pain and a law suit. Ah sweet freedom I can smell it. I will just delay. The Australian vacationer, Have a blast and send us updates and pictures.

@lerlo Is Costa Rica a reasonable place to live income wise?

@BettyColeman Sorry, I have no idea. It's a beautiful country from what I've heard
