Does being an atheist automatically mean you are a liberal? If not what do you identify with?

I think that being an atheist would make you more a progresive than a liberal. i associate liberals more with the religious moderate thank atheists.

Not automatically, but if you remove appeal to tradition and appeal to authority that can do a lot to move a person, and since most of us are raised religious you already have a willingness to question beliefs and the status quo.

Just means one doesn't believe in a god - but there's lots of flavors out there !

There are some incredibly politically conservative women on this site, who claim to be athiests. Real orange Trump chasers.

I'm a conservative atheist who is registered as Independent. Some of the things I believe in and or support-
Free market capitalism
Smaller government (way smaller)
Less taxes (way less)
The US Constitution
Financially conservative
Pro gun rights/self defense
Equal rights for all people regardless of background or sexual preference
Pro reproductive rights for everyone

With that said, some would say I fall under the Libertarian category, which is fine by me as the LP appears to be the only balanced political party.

Libertarian = socially liberal BUT fiscally responsible.

I don't think it makes you 'liberal,' but I do think it's going to make you more fact-based. After all, the reason people become atheists is they can no longer justify a belief that seems to have no data to back it up. I've met Conservative atheists, but that was years ago. Today's Conservative has abandoned facts and data, joined conspiracy theory, and supports fascism and the destruction of the America our Founding Fathers built. I think they call themselves atheists in an effort to pretend they have some cred... but when questioned at any level, it suddenly becomes obvious they're no more atheist than Franklin Graham.

Your religious (or lack of) belief in God(s) has nothing to do with how you will lean politically. They are exclusive to one another (or are designed to be).

The fact that it is being used to dupe some is just some win-at-all-costs types collecting easy votes...they only care about religion as much as it can make them more powerful. A tool for them more than a strict doctrine they must follow

Of course not. I've met plenty of conservative and liberatarian atheists. Atheism, definitionally, has zero to do with anything but lack of belief in any gods.

Now ... atheists tend to be liberal, egalitarian, and tolerant. Because those are generally rational positions to take, and considered atheism tends to arise from a commitment to critical thinking skills. But humans are nothing if not irrational and inconsistent at least in ways, so ... there are just no hard and fast rules.

Great answer...kinda says it all

@Dan1947 How does this "interjection" you speak of happen? If I'm an atheist who happens to be politically progressive, am I supposed to pretend I'm not?

No but it helps.
