I adore science and scientist and the drive to discover even though I kind of lack it myself, I love to follow those who have it.

But as I experience the wonder and intricacies of nature and have a growing understanding of just how complex everything is I can't help but think "This is why people think there is a god"

Rather that taking hold of the unknown the grasp as straws and weave a basket that holds their god. They look at the incredible complexity and only surmise "Of course there is a god, there is no other explanation." because they need there to be an explanation.

I love the fact that there is so much we don't have explanations for, it's the closest thing we have to real magic. But not knowing something does not make it supernatural and staying everything with "MADE BY GOD" has the opposite effect to understanding, it's saying we don't need to understand it because we have already given it a cause that we are content with.

People who think there is a god are like the guy who sees a magic trick and completely convinced that he knows how it is done he refuses to be impressed. And even if he's correct and does know how the trick is done he looses out on the wonder of how a simple illusion can be done so seemingly effortlessly.

I see wonder in every thing, even simple magic tricks that I know how they are done, because when they are done well they are magical and I do not require anything supernatural for me to see the magic that is reality.

I get it, I understand the need and/or desire for there to be a god. I just think they are missing out. The idea that the laws of nature were created in an instant and have dictated the formation of everything by a process of never ending evolution. I don't need a god to explain it and somehow thinking a god did it only takes away from just how fantastic it is.

Now the need to worship a god and to give thanks for your creation? That I don't get. Even my parents, the thought of thanking them for my being here seems insane, so thanking a creator of the universe seems, well, even more insane.

Don't get me wrong, I give thanks every day, I just don't give that thanks to anything more than myself because where I am and what I am doing is mostly due to me. I may thank my parents for giving me this opportunity but I could be just as easily cursing them for brining me into this world.

The Universe IS, it needs no explanation because there is no reason for it, it just is, why can't people just accept that and be happy that they get to experience it.

I know as an atheist I am not going to change the minds of anyone who believes there is a god and I really have no interest in doing so. To steal the sales pitch often used on me, I just wish they could experience life without trying to grapple with how their god fits into it and the problem with evil. To me it is so much easier to see that there is no evil, shit just happens and sometimes mentally unhealthy people do things so horrible it seems like evil is real.

I could talk nonstop on how it seems silly to think there is a god and how atheism is the only real logical choice, especially when you consider that to be religious you need to choose among thousands of variations and then convince yourself that variant is the correct one. But I do respect true Christians, most of whom do not ascribe to a particular sect and typically think most Christians are full of shit, which they are. But the argument "God just is" is so unsatisfying, it just like when our parents basically told us to shut up by saying "Because I said so".

People like Sagan and Feynman and Tyson and Lawrence Krauss and Dawkins and Hawking and Brian Cox and Sean Carroll and Jerry Coyne and even Bill Nye and the never ending list of Scientist and science minded people who dive deep into the interworking of what we call reality and all they see is wonder, they are not atheist despite the wonder, they are atheists because of it. There is no need for a god to explain anything and even if there was a god it does not explain anything so why bother with it?

A brilliant man said "If you want to make an apple pie from scratch you first need to create a universe", but then you have to ask yourself what kind of insanity would create a universe to make an apple pie from scratch when you have the ability to just make the apple pie and can bypass the making of a universe. If you believe the universe was create for you you have to question, was it for you or was it for dolphins, or bears, or cats or fungi or pine trees. If the universe was created for something specific then you just might be one of the countless byproducts of a working universe for what it was actually created for. Philosophy is fun and deep down that is all that religion is, it is the contemplation of the unanswerable question. Because even if the reality is that the universe is just a hologram or this is just a simulation, it does not change the fact that this is our universe, this is our reality, this is what we have to work with, and speculating there is a master programer is pointless because you will never know the actual motivations of such a programmer, how much time do you want to waste guessing vs. just accepting your that all you can do is guess. I mean, I haven't figured out what my parents want from me, what chance to do have guessing what a creator of the universe want from you?

I know I am made of star stuff and stars are made of star stuff because matter can be turned into energy and so energy can be turned into matter and as far as I know energy does not have to take up space or time so the idea of coalesced energy creating the universe does not need a creator and evolution explains everything else. Not having an explanation that we are 100% certain of does not mean there must be a god and humans have a very long history of creating gods to explain things and letting go of those gods once we got real explanation.

Anyway, guess I was having a Tyson brain fart, hope you don't mind.

Hope you are all having a wonderful evening, summer is almost over ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

I little tip.....try to be more concise! Thatโ€™s a lot of text to read and digest.....break it down and keep it simple. It will attract more replies if you make your point clear, and stick to one subject per post.
