I had long planned to get in the path of last summer's Total Solar Eclipse that occurred on Aug. 21, 2017, a year ago, tomorrow! I flew to Denver, Co and rented a car and included seeing it on a two week tent camping trip to WY, ID, UT and CO (been tent camping for 50+years).
The Total Solar Eclipse was absolutely spectacular, as many had described. I had first heard about a Total Solar Eclipse from my mother when I was a young child of 5 years. If you viewed it great. If you have not, you will get another (and last chance) again on April 8, 2024 (6 years). The path will go from Mexico northeastward to Carbondale, IL, across Niagara Falls, NY and Rocheter, NY to Burlington, VT into souther Ontario, Canada.
It is not just an astronomical event, but a sight of great beauty and awe. It is truly the sight of a lifetime; don't miss it. You have plenty of time to prepare to get eclipse glasses to protect your eyes (and perhaps a camera lens and eclipse filter to protect against damage to your eyes and the camera lens).
I was there with ASK (Atheists Society of Knoxville). We viewed it in Athens TN. I was one of the greatest things I've ever seen. The people we were with started applauding spontaneously when it went full eclipse. There were kids and grandparents as old as 80 there. It was a great time!
It was my second total solar eclipse. I made a point of being in the path and taking my daughter knowing how amazing it is. Perfect weather, during, and overall trip with my daughter.
Had been telling anyone who would listen not to miss it. One guy thanked me because he only went because I told him totality was not to be missed. Many who didn't see totality still think they saw the eclipse but I just smile and know they don't know what they speak of. LOL
I saw it in Columbia, SC. I had a park all picked out with a good view, bought some munchies, and went there to discover an 85% cloud cover. I said to myself that I didn't come all this way to watch clouds get dark, so I got in the car and drove in the direction of fewer clouds and ended up 15 miles north in a Walmart parking lot, where I got a good view.
It really was incredible. I've never seen a photo that caught how beautiful it is. The corona was 3-4 sun diameters in every direction, so it was huge. The last 30 seconds before totality was neat, how it went from cloudy day amount of light to full moon lighting. It was also strange how the sky was dark but the horizon in every direction was bright.
A friend and I went to SC and viewed it with her sisters family at a school playground. School had already started there but they didn’t have school that day due to the eclipse. It was spectacular! Not just seeing it but also hearing it. The bird sings were tremendous!
I walked out my front door to view it. Absolutely spectacular!!
I drove up to Missouri by myself to see it....it was great but I cried the whole way home out of loneliness. That's about what I remember from the day. My rattie roommate was with me....but he slept through the eclipse.
That moment of totality is amazing.
I witnessed it at a minor league baseball stadium in Nashville, and hearing several thousand people gasp at the same instant is something I will never forget.
Really going to try to arrange for travel to the next one.
Wow I just realized a year has passed since I planned on killing myself under that fateful eclipse... Can't remember why I chose not to, I just remember spending that day alone. Oh wait I just remembered it's because I finally decided what I wanted to do with my life! I'm happy now
It was awesome and for a short period of time the people of this country were united in watching a grand spectacle of the universe. We are the only planet in our solar system where the planet and a moon line up to produce an eclipse.
