I like to start from the assumption that people are capable of making conscious choices for themselves, even if they make a different choice than I would or even if their choices don't make sense to me

Some people do. Many, I think. It is wise to remember that others have reasons for their POV even if it makes no sense to you.

You can never really know where they are coming from and why they make the decisions they make.
