This may be the site to post some of my thoughts. Being agnostic usually means not having a belief that enough evidence exists to either confirm or deny the existence of God. It seems to me that we must navigate through life following our own moral compasses. Where the source of our moral foundation comes from is up for debate. Certainly we are socialized toward accepting certain beliefs that help each of us to determine right from wrong. In western society much of this stems from the judeo-christian influence of accepted religion. As I said debatable. But morality aside I have observed the behavior of humans (myself included) and am witness to our predilection toward the abdication of personal responsibility for our own lives in exchange for the comforts of authority. This occurred to me while discussing and contemplating the mind set of the flat earth believers. At which time I realized I was guilty of accepting much of science and many facts as truth though the mathematics used to conclude these facts were beyond my capacity to personally verify. Just as I had accepted much of written history as fact before understanding such variables as the winners write history (the losers are often dead) or the influence of poor translations and the personal bias of writers. My point is that even today I accept much of what I read as having at least a reasonable possibility of being true and I do so because it is far easier for me to accept the authority of an experts conclusions than it is for me to travel to each location and dig up the bones or do the math so to speak. I suspect many if not most of us humans behave the same way toward people considered authorities in a given field. So though it may seem rational for us to do so what we are also doing is accepting hearsay from sources we have not personally vetted and the fact that most of us do so suggests to me that we are comfortable with the idea of authority on some basic human level. Hell it my be written into our DNA. So far be it for me to deride some ones faith in the authority of a god when I exhibit a similar faith in the authority of human experts....
