I was 11 or 12 and was re-reading the Genesis story of creation when I suddenly had a flash insight that the story, if taken literally, was nonsense.

I had doubts at that age, but didn't get aroudn to actually reading the bible until I was in high school. At the same time we read teh old testament, we were studying Greek mythology in school and to me the Bible just seemed liked just another myth only not written as well.

So yeah, reading the bible made me an atheist too.

I have a real issue with people who "pick and choose" those passages that are to be taken literally, and those not. When you point out some obvious nonsense, it gets thrown back as "you're not supposed to take that literally", or "it's a metaphor".

i never took it literally...then i was told i was supposed to, i got really confused

The entire book is non-sense. It was written by men who would be amazed at the astonishing magic of a pocket lighter. It's mostly just speculation based on human emotions and inherent biases with no basis in reality or science. You would expect it to be intuitive in a primal sense and absurd in a rational sense.

Same as me. 12 years old. I think at that point you have had enough science education that you can recognize that the majority of what's in Genesis is crazy.

As a kid in catholic school, I asked the nun how we got more people if Adam and Eve had two sons? I guess it seemed stupid to her also. Her answer was that they had lots of children the buybull doesn't talk about. I guess the family that lays together, stays together. Where was the Garden of Eden, Mississippi?
