They are becoming ubiquitous. Cities and country. The Eastern variant or coywolf is slightly larger than those out west and more shy toward humans, thus seen less, even though they are all around, and can be heard (They have a peculiar howl, short) at night.
Just my personal theory but I think coywolves have come about to fill the void of feral cats not having any predators until they came to be. People who maintain feral cat colonies have helped contribute to the advent of this new creature IMO.
@Qualia I agree. They are here now, in the East due to the loss of apex predators. Feral cats kill small animals, mostly birds, and at an alarming rate.
@Beowulfsfriend Yes they are super destructive. What kills me are otherwise intelligent people who enable and even foster this mess.
I've no love of feral cats, at all. They go for low hanging fruit like slow birds, fledglings on the ground, newborn fauna. Rats not so easy a catch.
and before I get piled on I like cats, just not ferals or people who maintain colonies.
@Qualia it disturbs me to see domesticated cats left loose, or having become feral.
